Margie's Story
Margie is from San Bernardino, CaliforniaMargie's schools include Woodrow Wilson High School, Long Beach City College, University of Redlands.
I worked at the Carousel Preschool for awhile. I think it was at Cherry and 3rd. Then I moved across the street and worked at Yetts.
I attended LBCC from 1971 through 1973 and graduated with AA in Early Childhood Development. I worked at my church preschool, Our Savior’s Lutheran Preschool for about 5 years. As much as I loved the kids and the work, I really didn’t make enough money for rent and other necessities.
I went to work for Southern California Edison and was there for 20 years. In 2001 they downsized the IT department and I was laid off.
I went back to college at the University of Redlands. I earned my teaching credential and was hired by the San Bernardino City School District. I planned on working with them until I died at my desk. Unfortunately...Expand for more
, I was hired to work in a middle school rather than an elementary school. Not my cup of tea. I knew I would have a stroke or a heart attack if I stayed, so after 8 years I retired.
I left out getting married in 1996 and divorced in 2001.
While at the middle school, I volunteered with the California Cadet Corps. We only had ROTC in Long Beach. I really enjoyed working with the Cadets. We went on bivouacs, marched in parades, and competed in competitions. I was a 1st Lieutenant. Because the cadets are a part of the California National Guard, I was also a Lieutenant in the Guard. When I realized the soldiers who just got back from fighting had to salute me, I stopped wearing my uniform on bases. It just wasn’t right. Since I am no longer able to go on hikes and do the other physical things I decided to stop working with them be and do miss the fun times I had.
I have been retired ever since I 2014.
