Margo's Story
Life
15 July 07--I've been in the Air Force 12 years now and stationed in Hawaii. I love the location and love my job! My boys are now 11 and 4...my do they grow fast! They absolutely love Hawaii as well. I've been lucky to have deployed 2 times...the last time was in 2005. I think my time will be up again in spring '08. Wish me luck!
In just a few days I will visit home for about a week....it's been a while since my last visit and as always, look forward to being home. I was browsing the 'Cordova' site and it was good to see alot of you! Everyone looks great! Feel free to shoot me an e-mail--I look forward to hearing from you.
Military
Left CA to join the military in '94. First assigned in MD near Washington DC in 1995-1998. My career field is VERY diverse...could be doing anything from food service, lodging or fitness to mortuary. I deployed once to Saudi Arabia for 4 months in support of Operation Southern Watch. While assigned there the most interesting yet gruesome task I performed was going to the port mortuary in Dover, DE to process the bodies of service members and civilians who lost their lives in the US Embassy bombings in Kenya/Tanzania in 1998. For me, at the time, it was the big eye opener to terrorism.
I moved on to San Antonio, TX...yeehaw. This California girl didn't know what to think of 'the south' at first. I soon became VERY fond of that wonderful city. Lackland AFB is where Air Force boot camp is conducted. Right out of boot camp the airmen attend their job specialty school........Expand for more
that's where I worked. I was an instructor for my career field and loved every minute of it! I soon became specialized as a fitness instructor which took me to Europe twice, training troops how to be fitness specialists and train Air Force members to being 'Fit to Fight'.
My current assigned is at Charleston AFB in SC. I work in the Fitness Center as the Fitness Program Director where I run anything and everything having to do with fitness. I'm a personal trainer, teach fitness classes and oversee special fitness events on base. Quite an enjoyable job! I'm scheduled to deploy to the 'war zone' in May. Not looking forward to being away from friends and family for 4 months however, that's the commitment that comes along with being in the military.
3 Aug 07--It's been a while since I've updated this. In 2005 I ended up deploying to Kyrgyzstan. It wasn't the busiest place of all the deployment locations in the sense of combat but, nonetheless I knew everyday how I was supporting the war.
In Dec 2006, I changed assignments from S. Carolina to Hickam AFB in Hawaii. Once again, a fun job--I plan and coordinate programs for all junior enlisted Airmen to participate in...this is anything from planning kayak/hiking adventures, block parties, movie night, x-box game competitions and a few other things. There's more to my existence in the military than this but, too lengthy to try and explain. Yes, I still deploy--pretty much doing the same thing in a deployed environment. Helps keep the morale of the troops healthy.
