Maria's Story

Life What can I say-Never marry your High School Sweetheart!!! I ended up marrying Mr. Robert Lanier in 1986 and 3 daughters/ten years later it ended up in a divorce in 1996. I was so happy to finalize that process-it was like I was pardoned and released from a Life Sentence (now that is happiness for you Folks!). I have survived breast cancer and honestly, that is all I want to say about that. I've lost too many friends to this that I don't want to go on and on. I remarried in 2001. Wasn't looking for anyone, wasn't dating anyone serious in those days...but it's funny how it just sorta happened. I guess when you are least expecting it-"IT" comes around the corner and you smack right into "IT". We have enjoyed camping, traveling, redecorating, and working together. I amazed at how much we had in common and how much we could talk & understand each other. We decided to try to have a child together and wouldn't you know it...I won the lottery! I ended up having twin girls in 2006. They were preemies and stayed in the NICU for a month, but they came home with a clean bill of health. Now, it's having to start the whole "raising the family" all over again. I am lucky that I have been able to stay at home with them. Life is funny. Life is dramatic & stressful...but I love my life! Drop me a line...I'd love to hear from you. School I enjoyed my high school years. My friends were those that were my friends during middle school and elemtary school. I think that my best friend happened to be Bautista Montanez. He was always there for me...even when his sister hated me. I miss him the most because we could talk, laugh and even cry during our chatting sessions. Oh yeah-Brandee Furlong! How could I forget you. We've kept in touch over the years. Now she is a great friend to have today and then. Which teacher Inspired me? Not any from South Dade High that's for sure. Don't get me wrong...I enjoyed some great teachers at SDHS and that was my History teacher Mr. McQuale who got me into reading Time & NewsWeek. Mr. Ford who taught me to enjoy a great book, and Mr. Amos who actually made me understand great plays. These are the teachers who stick to my mind. I don't want to forget Mr. Rogers the Asst. Principle because if he had not kept me in check and out of trouble, I might not have made it. I can't say much about my experience in high school. I attended because I wanted to graduate. I didn't make a ton of friends, and I guess it was because I didn't kiss ass, hang with groupies, or dress to impress. I was me, just me. College I really can't say much about my college days/years because I went part-time while I was married and working a full-time job. It was busy...Expand for more
and complicated. I am glad that I finally graduated. Yes it took years and years...but it was all worth it. Workplace I've worked in so many places that I actually have to laugh about it. Started off working as a cashier in Winn-Dixie in high school. That led me to another job as a personal secretary in a Produce company. I had no clue what I was doing, but I believe that the owner had a huge crush on me. Afterwards I worked as a Leasing Consultant for a huge company. The work hours and the pay sucked so I quit. I applied & landed a sweet job as a clerk in the City Clerks Office in City Hall. This job taught me to do just about everything from running a PBX Console to working the offset printers. I ended up leaving this sweet job due to complications in the pregnancy. While I was home with my third daughter I decided to go into my own business and started off a cleaning company. I did rather well in it. Had a job lined up every day of the week. This kept me extremely busy, but happy. I sold the company & clients to a friend when I divorced and moved out of the area. After the divorce I worked as a Substitute teacher in my daughters elementary school. It kept me in touch with them and I got paid (which is nice). I continued doing this until they got into Middle School and decided not to follow them along. I went to Emergency Communications Academy for North Miami Beach PD and graduated. I entered the 911 Communications field and totally loved the excitement. I transferred from PD to Fire because there was less stress and more pay. I so loved this job!! Burning buildings, people trapped, Car accidents, gunshot wounds, air rescue, mutual aid...it was just so thrilling being part of it. I left this field when my husband and I decided to try getting preggo. I figured that a stress free bull-crap job would be good during the whole "getting preggo" process so I got a job as a Hearing Aid Receptionist/Tech. I tweaked hearing aids, did minor repairs, instructed new users on how to wear and care for their new hearing aids, along with the duties of any good receptionist. I think that the gross part of this job was having to clean out hearing aids~ear wax!!! Ugh! I stopped working after I got pregnant-again, due to complications & mandatory bed rest. Now I am a stay-at-home-mom to my girls and this is a 24/7 job. My pay is all the hugs & kisses I can get in a day. The peace of mind knowing that my girls are being treated well and taken care of is priceless. I plan on returning to the Teaching Field once the girls enter Elementary School. Again, I can keep an eye on them and get paid. Meanwhile, I will attend college to update my degree and prepare for the future.
