Maria's Story
Life
So, I've been back in California since 2002 after living on the east (NY & NJ) for four years. Although I am happy to be closer to my family and I was lucky enough to meet the most amazing man on earth upon my return to So Cal (we married in April 2004) I miss the Big Apple. Still, thought it'd be fun to catch up with old friends. Feel free to e-mail. Hope you're all well.
College
I worked full-time through most of my college years. It was a good experience, but it made it difficult to meet other students. I took the scenic route (4 colleges/universities by the time I graduated) in my studies, but ultimately graduated from UCSB (it only took 5.5 years). I made some friends, but my closests friends in college were my sister and my co-workers. To this day, Kathy J. from Vons is still a dear friend. After college I did all sorts of fun stuff (see work bio), but in the end I decided to return to school. I was accepted into Whittier Law School, but decided to transfer because I was looking for a more progressive faculty and an established clinical program. After a much heated discussion with the Dean of Students (she was trying to talk me out of leaving) I submitted a transfer application to CUNY School of Law at Queens College in Flushing, NY--thankfully they...Expand for more
accepted me. As a result, I met my closest friends. And, if good friends weren't enough I also participated in a program that allowed me to go to the University of Habana and study the Cuban legal system with friends and Cuban law students. Not too shabby abby....
Workplace
Effective 10/17/06 I will be working at the CSU Office of the Chancellor as an Employee Relations Manager. Woo, hoo! Working with all 23 CSU campuses. Over the years I've worked with tons of social justice/social service type organizations. I've worked with the United Farm Workers as a legal assistant; an election campaign organizer in several California cities; a program associate for a labor and environmental justice coalition in Trenton, NJ; a staff attorney in Atlantic City; and Associate Director for SAJE - an economic justice organization in L.A. I've also worked as a waitress for a Mexican restaurant in Sacramento that was the local hangout for the State's Latino Caucus - interesting to see our politicos in a totally casual environment. Over the years I've had the opportunity to work with amazing individuals who have provided an enourmous amount of guidance and knowledge. I'm happy with what I do and I look forward to meeting more fantabulous people in the future -- in work and play.
