Marie's Story

Life I was named Marie Kathryn Krouse, Kathryn after Kathryn Grayson, the musical star! I am of Lithuanian/German/Irish/Native American descent, DAR on my paternal grandmother's side. Lived in Bradbury Heights, District Heights, Hyattsville, Essex, and Mayo, Maryland until 2002, when Charlie & I moved to Jacksonville, Fl. I married for the first time in 1967, to Thomas Young Conley II of Silver Spring. We divorced in 1977. I was a "gay divorcee" until I married Charlie Stuart of Chevy Chase in 1984. We have 4 sons (2 each) and 6 grandchildren (2 boys & 4 girls),none of whom are close by. Boy, married life can sure be wonderful when you follow God's choice for you and not your own. Other major life events include a motor cycle accident in 1980, in which I nearly lost my left eye (always be sure your helmet is on and securely latched!) and awoke to "my sinful ways"; finally getting by BS after working on it for 20 years, and getting my Master in Ministry. We're now semi-retired and loving are life here in Florida! I only "sin" now with my soul mate, Charlie. I may look now like my mother, but I still feel 25 inside! School I started 1st grade at Bradbury Heights Elementary and was afraid of my teacher Mrs. Renner whom my older sister Jeanette said was a witch! Mrs. Renner was great though and tried everything to make me feel comfortable and built my self-image and confidence. I later wrote her a note to thank her for that. Moved in first grade to District Heights and District Heights Elementary where I worked on art projects, plays, chorus, band, student council and the school newspaper (Thank you Mr. Keeny for all your help!) I also got my start in music from Mrs. Courtney. The love of music has never left me and is still a big part of my life. Other favorites there were Mrs. Willifred, Mrs. Krahl, and Miss Rohrbach as well as Mr. Keeney of course! Francis Scoot Key, Jr High until 9th grade (I really did miss you John Rooney!) when I moved and transferred to Rollingcrest Jr High in Hyattsville. This really messed me up for years to come. I lost all self-confidence and didn't really regain it until decades later! I mostly was in band and FHA there. Graduated from Northwestern, Hyattsville in '66. Most activities there were FNA,FHA, Honor Society, Spanish Club, Turtle Club, working on school plays, and assisting our nurses and teachers. My only high school regret is not having dated that much and never going to a prom! freshman year at Towson State. After leaving Towson State I had two children. I did go to Prince George's Com. College in the early 70s to continue working on my BS degree, but had to stop again because of marital problems. We bought a house and moved to Mayo, Md, and I went to work for Woodies. The marriage ended. After changing to a corporate job at Woodies, I went back to school pt at Anne Arundel Com. College and then the University College receiving my BS in Business/Accounting. After retiring from Woodies, and now in my 2nd marriage to Charlie Stuart (BCC, '56), I went to Chesapeake Bible College to get my Master in Ministry. I also worked some toward my PhD in Christian Counseling before moving to Jacksonville. Workplace I did volunteer work during high school at both the Veteran's Administration Hospital in DC and Spring Grove State Hospital in Baltimore. My first paying job was as a Sales Associate, then Sales Assistant Manager in Dresses in the Annapolis Store. I was promoted to Department Manager of Shoes. I joined corporate offices as Internal Auditor in 1981 and moved to the DC main offices. While there, I moved a few years later to Shortage Control as an auditor/analyst. We moved to the new Alexandria offices. In the early 90s and after the merger with John Wannamaker's, I moved to Information Systems under Sandy Berg. She was probably the best corporate manager I had. My title there was Price Management Administrator and later also EDI Analyst. I left Woodies in 1996 before the final bankruptcy. We were going through lay-offs then, and I told Sandy that if any others had to go, let it be me, for everyone else in the department were young people just starting out and I could afford to leave. After all, Charlie was retired and I wouldn't mind retiring too! After retirement, while taking course for my Master in Ministry Degree, I was a Lecturer in Bible for Chesapeake Bible College & Seminary. After getting my Master's degree, I became a professor and taught classes in Bible, church history, and basic counceling. I later also took responsibility as registrar of the Edgewater campus. I have continued as a volunteer teacher in Christian Formation at my church, St. John's Chapel (Episcopal), here in Jacksonville. In our spare time, both Charlie and I have a stall in Tin City Antique Mall where we sell Railroadania, art glass, other smalls and some furniture and primitives. Of course, we do a lot of work with church commissions and Habijax and food ministries.
