James's Story
Life
I served on the Leahy for two years (1975-1977) when I was young and dumb and seemed to take nothing serious. I met alot of good people aboard the Leahy and in the military in general and I wished I'd have stayed in and made a career of it, but like they say "hind-sight". I was on board her when she changed home ports from Norfolk, Va. to San Diego, Ca. We went through the Panama canal and had some pretty nice liberty at Alcapulco. seen alot of places in this old world that this old country boy would have never seen if I hadn't enlisted. Sure there were some rough times but isn't there on any job?
I'm a correctional officer now after doing body and paint work for 25 years with no retirement and no benefits I changed my job title and been at the prison for over 5 years now. People ask me if I like it, well no but it's cleaner work and steady.
