Marilyn's Story
Life
After graduating from AHS I went to Rhode Island College in Providence where I got a B.A. in Spanish. During college I worked at the United Nations and I studied in Spain. In 1973 I began working as a Spanish teacher and have worked in Shelton,Ct., Barrington,R.I., The Westover School, Salem, NH, Brookline and Marblehead, Mass., The University of LaVerne in Naples, Italy, St. Mary's Bayview in R.I., and I am currently employed by Fairfax County Public Schools in VA. During my career I was Mass. Spanish Teacher of the Year, Rockefeller Scholar to Guatemala where I lived with Cakchikel maya families to study the stories of the Maya sacred books, learned German and lived with a family outside of Vienna, Austria, spent 3 years living outside of Naples,Italy where I studied Italian Art and Culture and taught English to Italian graduate students and professionals and my husband Peter and I adopted our first child, Adam Michael, from a tiny village in Transylvania, Romania. Our daughter Krista Jane, was born two years later. We've been living in Fairfax, Va. for 14 years now and Krista just finished 8th grade and Adam is going into 11th. Krista has been riding horses since she was 6 and became the owner of a beautiful chestnut Mustang mare named Mustang Annie last Christmas. She has been working with Parelli Natural Horsemanship to retrain Annie(and herself) naturally. She has also volunteered at the Equine Rescue League since she was little. She is still devastated by the passing of her foster pony Mort who was her best friend, perfect teacher, and spiritual advisor. She continues to take lessons in Hunter/Jumper equitation at Fox Meadow Farm in Haymarket, Va. She gave us a good scare in January when a horse that she was exercising at a private farm nearby swung his whole body around and kicked her in the spine. She missed 4 months of school and still managed to make up all her work, finish with honors and be pinned in the National Junior Honor Society. Adam is a dynamite hockey player and now only plays league hockey to allow time for friends and girlfriend. He's been dating the same girl since 8th grade. Adam is the social director for all of his friends and we always seem to have a house full of teenagers on the weekend. (at least we know where they are and what they are doing) Pete is the chauffeur for the gaggle of kids....Can't wait (and scared as hell) for Adam to get his license.
I've been working as a Family Response Team member for the Child and Adolescent Bipolar Foundation. After years of fighting to save my own child's life I am giving back to the wonderful organization that helped me to help him. I counsel parents of newly diagnosed children on where to find support groups and physicians who are appropriately trained t...Expand for more
o treat this devastating disorder. This is probably the most important work that I've done in my life. If you have a chance, visit their website and make a donation. You could save a kid's life.
Looking back on growing up in Ansonia...it was a great place to grow up. When I first took my daughter to what I call Bassett's Farm and what everyone else calls Osborndale..she said that she wished that she could have grown up playing on that farm and skating between the hills. One of my son's favorite memories is of cruising on the Housatonic with Arnold Tyler and visiting the Indian rock across from the old YMCA camp. We didn't have a lot growing up...but we had some great places to play and store memories.
One of the things that we do here in Virginia and West Virginia is to go camping often. It helps us to unwind and refocus and it strengthens our bond as a family. We also look forward to our annual trip to Buxton on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This year we are also looking forward to a short visit to the beach in Milford.
2010 update: Krista is almost 17 and searching for the perfect college. She wants to study Psychology and work with kids using equine assisted therapy. High on her list are Sweet Briar, Wilson College and Hollins University. She would like to ride competitively in college.
Adam took a detour from school when his son was born and plans to finish high school soon and continue his education.
Peter and I are enjoying our grandson,
I'm off to Jamaica in July with my college friends to celebrate 40years of friendship.
2011 update
retired from FCPS this year. Now I work at Oakcrest School in McLean, Va. It is a private school for girls affiliated with the Opus Dei. I have wonderful classes and the work atmosphere is great. I'm teaching Spanish I, II, IV, and AP Spanish Language. This year has brought some sorrow to our family. OUr granddaughter, Serenity Noelle, was born in January with Trisomy 18, She fought for life for two months in the NICU at Fairfax Hospital, but passed away on March 11th. Very sad for all of us but a blessing for her.
Traveled to Hilton Head, S.C. with daughter Krista for Spring Break. Enjoyed bicycling, sunbathing, walking on the beach, watching the dolphins, and swimming in the pool. Also, spent a day touring Savannah. It was the perfect Spring Break.
Krista graduates from high school on June 20th. She is looking forward to the prom. Due to some health issues she plans to stay home and attend Northern Virginia Community College for the first two years. In Va. she will have automatic acceptance at any college in the commonwealth public or private so it will work out well.
Hubby continues to work as a senior contracts specialist with the FAA. He's been enjoying the travel this year.
