Marilyn's Story

I've taken a meandering path in life and so far it's taken me to different parts of Columbus, Ohio! I'm hoping that in the future I can see other parts of the country and travel abroad . . . Since graduation I've been married (18 years) and single (13 years). I was socialized to the world of work at OSU, where I typed, filed, answered phones and helped students navigate the OSU bureaucracy from 1981 thru 2002. took a break from the work routine from 1988--1992 to finish my bachelor's degree in Family Relations & Human Development. it was a wonderful time for self development. I completed a master's degree in Community Counseling through the University of Dayton in 2004 and gradually found my place in the world of mental health work -- as a peer to mental health consumers. essentially, I went to school to become exactly what I've been all along, I've just got more to offer now! have been working part time as a "Peer ...Expand for more
Support Specialist" (gotta love the title!) at the P.E.E.R. Center, a drop in center for mental health consumers, since 2007 and just recently (March 2010) came on board with Case Western Reserve University as a "Peer Consultant." perhaps the best thing about both positions is that the illness I've been living with since high school (major depression, recurrent) is a requirement for the jobs. I even put my years of recovery on my resume for Case! life is good with my cats, church community and folks I've met throughout the years. and that dream of travel has started to materialize -- I go throughout the state for my job with Case. the way I see it, it's all about prep work and this is a lowkey way to become familiar with booking rooms, finding places to eat and navigating unfamiliar places. this year I'm going to Mount Vernon, Newark and Cincinnati . . . eventually I'll go abroad, maybe to Nepal, Thailand and Belize!
