Life
There was a C&W song once, which I can't remember the name and artist of, about all I wanted to see was the city limit sign in the rear view mirror or something like that. So, that is just what I did in September of '71. After losing enough weight to meet the requirements I joined the Army. You've heard 3 times a charm? Well, on the 3rd trip to Jacksonville I was the right weight and joined. Family came by the house that night and asked where I was and my parents said I had joined the Army. They were shocked, they didn't think I would do it.
There is a old Army t.v. ad that says "join the Army and see the world." Well, I did and they sent my butt to Virginia for 6 1/2 years, then to Germany for 2 or so then on to Colorado, and finally Alaska. In all I spent 10 1/2 years in the military but I wanted to settle down for a while. And if you have ever seen AK you might understand why I became enchanted with the land, the people and yes, in retrospect the winters and summers.
I transferred my military time to the Federal Civil Service and went to work at one of the army bases. I met my husband there and we married in 1987. We have two beautiful kids , a boy 12 and a girl 9. After we retired, he in '01 and me in '03 the winters really started to get to us. t to start a political debate. Refineries built next to schools for example. If the refinery went it would take out the 3 schools and the town. And yet gas was more than it was in the states. WHY??? So, we stuck a pin in the map, had an Ak moving sale. Got rid of what we couldn't sell hit the road. Oh, we tried to come back to the Ft. Meade area but, over all the taxes changed our minds. So, we drove from AK to Missouri in 8 days with 4 people, a cat, and a 60 lb dog in a rv pack to the gills. The people faired pretty well but the cat licked all the hair off of her belly and has never let it grow back. We looked at 65 houses in 4 days before settling on one. After a while they all start looking the same.
It's a year later now the kids are doing well in school and we've settled into a routine. Well sort of, you can never have a set routine with kids, you know that. We have some additions to our family though. Yes, it can happen in your 50's boys and girls.... Drum roll please.
It's a girl. It's another girl. It's a boy... It's my mother-in-law and her cat (girl), and last but not least my schnauzer Bowzer (boy).
So, to sum it up. I ran away, joined the circus, moved around and had people yell at me, lived in a freezer for 25 years, and at 52 years old got a wild hair and decided to sell everything and move. Yup! that about sums my life up.
