Marilyn's Story
Life
After graduating from SDHS, I was able to complete two years of college before my financial situation, in combination with the lack of availability of evening classes at UCB, brought about what I had thought would be a pause in my college studies. At that point, I was able to better my financial situation at a faster pace through working than I could have by staying in college, so I was forced to consider attending college a luxury that I could no longer afford. I married in 1972, but was not able to successfully carry a child to term until the birth of our older son in December of 1980, and our second son followed in January of 1983. However, that turned out to be the totality of my successful pregnancies; after my second son was born, I was returned to my previous state of only miscarriages. I worked outside the home, in the business world in both San Francisco and Los Angeles, until we moved to Clovis in 1983, when I began working with my husband, who worked out of his office in our home, so that I could also be available for my children when they were small. One high point of our lives was the six months in 1985, during which my husband's employer sent our whole family to live in Holland while my husband was project manager for the development of a new European headquarters for the firm in Amsterdam. echt, enjoyed making friends within our community, our older son attended Dutch public school kindergarten as they are able to start at age 4, although they don't have to start until age 6, our younger son attended a local playgroup which was comparable to our nursery schools, and we all learned to speak and understand the Dutch language to some extent. We were all disappointed when my husband was ordered back stateside in February of 1986, as we had looked forward to more time to exlore Europe while we were there. Life back in Clovis was relatively calm, as we had purposely chosen a small, rural community for our children to grow up in. In addition to the six grandchildren we enjoy from my husband's four older kids, we now have two granddaughters from our older son. We have enjoyed the computer, as a really handy tool with which to accomplish things, since back in the mid 70s, and in more recent years we have also learned to enjoy it as one more method with which to communicate across the miles, as well as an often fantastic research tool. I can be reached via the internet.
I have since had a reversal of sorts - my husband is gone, our consulting firm is gone, our tiny acreage just outside of town is gone, and I am building a new phase of my life and building a new career in retail.
I can still be reached via the internet and would enjoy hearing from old friends.
