Marilyn's Story

Life has bestowed me several blessings... I have a very lovely and talented family. Following High School Graduation, attended L.A. Pierce College. Became a member of Delta Chi Episilon Sorority, and enjoyed the "Greek Life". Was made a "Little Sister" to Sigma Delta Fraternity, and later on, was crowned "Sweetheart". What a huge honor. While at Pierce, was also affiliated with Womens Associated Students, Student Council, and Inter Fraternal-Sorority Council. We all worked hard at our studies, but also enjoyed all the perks of being part of that elite fraternal group. I was fortunate to make life long friends with many whom I still am in contact, and cherish dearly. I have two beautiful grown children, and five grand children. Two step children and they each have a child who I consider my own also. My son is married, resides in Southeast Texas where he owns a very successful rigging company. My daughter is married, and the proud mother of two beautiful girls, and two adorable sons. Our hearts are full as we enjoy each of them and attending their activities. One thing never changes, they love to come to their "Nana's" home to be spoiled silly and EAT, Eat, Eat! Once our family matured, and spread their wings, my husband and I filled our "empty nest" by adopting our canine family........... We have two energetic Min-Pins, Schatzie, and Coco, (aka Thunder and Lightening)! If only I had half their energy! Together, the family enjoys traveling in the U.S. and abroad. In addition we continue to, explore the great outdoors, camping, sailing, hiking and fishing. The U, S, National Parks are our favorite places . I've retired from a long rewarding career as a Floral Designer and Teacher. I currently stay active sewing, quilting, and machine embroidery. I love teaching the textile arts. My goal to reach as many unsung heros through making quilts and sewn donations to veterans homes. My love for cooking has somewhat taken a backseat, as there isn't enough hours in the day to keep up with the demands as there are more in need than one might imagine. My sewing friends and I stay busy with our contributions to those that are currently or have served in the U. S. armed service units. Most of the items we donate, find their way to the brave enlisted unsung heros serving overseas. In additition, many donations are distributed to Blue Star Mother's who have lost a loved one. Other worthy causes include but are not limited to, making blankets and quilts which assist "Project Linus", St. Jude Hosptials, and the handicapped children of Paul Newman's "Turtle Ranch" in Bouquet Canyon, CA. My passion for sewing grows daily, as the need is more apparent than ever. There are so many that are experiencing difficult times. It would seem I am constantly sewing on one of my machines! Sometimes two and running at once! Thank goodness for computerized machinery. My husband was so skilled and throughtful. Our bonus room was converted into a lovely sewing studio. I truly enjoy all forms of sewing, but I favor "heirloom" items, traditional quilting, and the art form of machine embroidery and applique. As native Californians, it doesn't take long to appreciate, there is no place...Expand for more
like home in sunny Southern California. Life "is" good. My family is happy, healthy, and flourishing. Each thankful for our many blessings. As I reflect back on my high school years, I often think of those impressionable teachers that made such an impact on my life. I often think about dear Miss Margurite Senchek, in the Women's P. E. Department, Mr. Morton Sircus, and Mr. Lyons my favorite History and Government teacher, but the most appreciated was Mrs. Minnette Harris in the Home Econ and Clothing Dept. I was in her class all but one semester and enjoyed and learned much of what I most enjoy today and pass along what I learned to my students. Mrs. Minnette Harris taught skills and techniques I still use today when constructing garments and creative sewing. She was thee most gentle, soft spoken, patient, instructor. I enjoyed listening to her sweet Southern drawl. Mrs. Harris was the one teacher that I would have been all too proud to call "Mom". She always had time to lend a tender ear and truly a dear "Lady"... I hold some wonderful memories of working on the school yearbook staff, being part of the drill team, and those Friday Night Football games and the dances that followed in the girls gym. Our prom in the new boys gym, was equally as memorable. The incredible decorations and themes. Nothing was as exciting as running through campus on "sweater day" showing off our class colors. The senior picnic, candlelight dinner, and grad night. Do they even do those things anymore? So much has changed, I wonder if the kids in schools now even have a clue how exciting it was to hear the music of our era. The Beatles, Stones, Doo-Opp, Mowtown and Surf music of the Beach Boys, Ventures and Jan and Dean. Our dress codes, haircuts, and shoe styles! Homework wasn't done on a computer. We got along just fine without a Cell Phone glued to our ear, Didn't need to Text every 5 minutes! Remember crusing down Van Nuys Blvd and wait in that long line to get a parking spot at Bob's Big Boy Drive-In for that classic burger, fries and a flavored Coke! (Waiting forever for the gal on skates) Then we had those Wednesday Club Nights, crusin' Van Nuys Blvd and turning around at Oxnard and driving back again, how many times? Gasoline wars, saving Blue Chip or Green Stamps? American Graffiti and Back to the Future were scripted right out of our high school era. I so loved tuning into KHJ, KFWB and KRLA to hear "Wolfman Jack", Sam Riddle, and Casey Kasum on the radio playing our requests. After school tuning into Lloyd Thaxton, and Dick Clark's American Bandstand. Can't forget the incredible cars! '57 Chevy's, Nomad wagons, and Woodys! My favorites were the vintage roadsters. We had it all....Those were our "Happy Days! Recently drove past VNHS only to see it fenced up and expanded to the limit. So much has changed. Sadly, the front of the Administration Building and Auditorium just don't have the welcoming charm as in the 60's. The test of time hasn't done the school justice and progress didn't do it any favors. Thank goodness for memories and photos in my high school scrapbook and yearbooks. Be well Alumni, and cherish those awesome days and VNHS.
