Marilyn's Story
MEMBER PROFILE FOR: MARILYN GRACE MEMBER OF THE MONTH! November, 2013
How long have you been a member of the Chicago YMCA?
I have been a member since 2010. I came in as a visitor. I immediately felt the family atmosphere.
Why did you join the YMCA?
Determinationâ¦I joined for health reasons. I am determined to get where I need to be. When I started, I weighed 402 pounds. I had been diagnosed with diabetes. My doctor told me I needed to change my diet and exercise. So that is what I did.
How does the YMCA motivate you to lead a healthier lifestyle?
The staff (Cheryl) took the time to talk to me and understand why I am here. Cheryl told me âstick with me and Iâll get you where you want to be.â It is great to know, Iâm not in this alone. I found comfort with the class instructor and the facility.
Why do you think the YMCA is important to the community?
The Y is very important. It provides older adults (not that...Expand for more
Iâm old) the opportunity be active. We can be comfortable around our peers. The Y also provides shelter and a safe place for kids. I was just telling my friend about the Y. She plans on joining with her kids. We enjoy the family atmosphere.
Do you have any lifestyle advice for other members of the community?
Join the Y. Even if you canât walk, just MOVE. My goal is to be out of this wheelchair by next summer and I WILL!
Determination and commitment are a necessity. I have a spine disease that causes degeneration of the lower spine and I use currently use a wheelchair. I have overcome my fear of water (still canât swim) by taking the aqua aerobics classes. I have lost 103 lbs and counting. I have also had the opportunity to write my first book, âMy Vacation from Hell: 28 Days in Jamaicaâ. The book talks about mental illness and manic depression as well as my battle with agoraphobia. The book will be out in December.
