Marilyn's Story
Life
Taught Vocal Music in Henryetta 1955-60. Married Coach Richard Chapman. We have daughter, Joan, son, David. Left Henryetta 1963, he coached at Tulsa Memorial, Edison, Memorial. I taught at Nimitz, Nathan Hale, East Central. We divorced 1971. Master's in Vocal Performance, OU 1973, DMA in Choral Conducting, OU 1994. Taught at Oral Roberts University 1980 to May 2003, having just retired. At the request of several of my voice students at ORU, I continued until May 2005 to see those students through their junior and senior recitals. Also in the 2003-04 school year I served as interim choral conductor at Tulsa University while they did a national search for a permanent conductor. Joan's boys are now 17 1/2 and 16. David is a computer person and guitar player with the same group from Whitney Jr. High (Jim Dittus, etc). David's daughter, Crystal, is 23, (yikes!) and endeavoring to make her way in the world. She has a precious 3 year old girl and a 9 month old daughter, making me a great grandma, twice! His son, Daxon, is 21 and began his army career summer 2008 with basic training. He finished Highschool December 2008 and took the next level of training summer 2009. In September 2006 David married a fine young woman, Missie. Their family now consists of her daughters Bronwyn and Cecily, and his son Daxon, now almost 21. July 2009 David and Missie ...Expand for more
had Timothy, now two years old. Daxon returned from active duty in Afghanistan in June 2011. In February 2010 Daxon married a wonderful bride, Kristen, and they are proud parents of baby Reece, now 5 months. Joan is a professional accompanist and piano teacher and has been a para-teacher at Eisenhower International School for 5 years in the 2nd grade French class, moving to 4th and 5th grade French in 2010. The school is a language immersion school in French and Spanish. Joan's boys went through the French program. Dylan is a senior at Memorial HS and Jonathan is junior at Memorial. Married husband #2, Newt Carver in 1973. He has 3 sons, 4 grandchildren and 6 great grands. On September 17, 2008 Newt passed away peacefully at our home, of congestive heart failure.
My greatest joy in life is conducting a choir, though I shall only be doing it once in a while at Boston Ave. Methodist Church where I serve as assistant choir director. I shall continue to teach voice at home, of course. As you may have read in the announcements here, I organized, in January of 2005, a Community Choir, now preparing to begin its seventh season. It is known as the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Tulsa. Students from my earliest and most recent teaching venues have become singers in this choir. What fun! If interested please email me through this venue. That's all, folks!
