Marilyn's Story

I was a Navy brat. I was born in San Diego but travelled throughout the US with my family, finally coming "home" to San Diego in time to attend La Jolla High School for my junior and senior years. Even then my family were transferred back east and wanted me to accompany them but I put my foot down. I had attended 12 schools at that point and I decided that was enough! I wanted to know a least a few of the people at my graduation. I lived with my grandmother in La Jolla for my final years and my first year of college at San Diego State College. I married Frederick McNeill Noad in 1960. From the UK, he was a graduate of Oxford University and a classical musician. I graduated from UCLA in 1968 with a BA. I travelled extensively throughout Europe with my husband looking for music in libraries for his many publications. It was a lot of fun. I lived in both London and Marbella Spain for extended periods where he wrote and I painted.. One of our trips was a "roots trip" to his birthplace Ellary, a lovely and remote family property in the Highlands of Scotland. From there we sailed around the western isles that had once been part of the mainland property. They were magnificent...wild and lu...Expand for more
sh due to the warm current that passes the Scottish coast at that latitude . The only cloud in the sky however, turned out to be a big one! It was a Force 9 Gale and we were in a 26 ft sail boat! We shouldn't have survived but we did. I think the ancient McNeill ancestors were looking after us because a huge lobster boat called the Colun Cille found us wallowing with anchors dragging in a small bay where we had spent the night. Our position offered us little shelter which they saw. The Captain shouted for us to tuck into their wake and we made it back to port at Oban "Colon Cille means St. Collumba whom I was told was the progenitor of the McNeill clan!. .That was quite a summer. After graduating I focussed on my art and exhibited it in various parts of the world. My last show was here in Ojai, California at the Porch Gallery this year and it was a sell out. I donated the money to the Ojai Defense Fund; an organization dear to my heart that protects this lovely valley from unwanted development. Though still interested in travel, my bucket list is actually quite short. I love it here, I live very close to nature, and I find it inspirational, so it takes a lot to budge me these days!
