Mary Alice's Story

Workplace I married three months after graduation, went to work the next spring at the Tax Office. My husband went in service and I quit my job to go be with him. When he got back we moved back to Smithland, left there for one year in Hughes Springs where my Dad bought into an Oil and Gas Dealership, and then back to Smithland. My husband went to work at my Daddy's country general merchandise store and I had my first child in l955, a girl, Carla Jean and then 27 mos. later a son, Marvin Louis who was killed in an auto accident at 20 years old in 1977. In l962 I went to work in Jefferson for the USDA, Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service ...Expand for more
(ASCS)and worked there until January l968. Took one year off and we bought the store from my Daddy in l969 and I worked there until the end of l988. I ran for County Tax Assessor-Collector and took office in l989 and have been there ever since. My husband died of a massive stroke in l996. I still work, have the farm and still have cattle and horses. My daughter has an interest with me in part of the land and cattle and lives next door. I have one grandchild, Marin Blackburn who was born in l984, and graduated from high school in 2003. She is currently working at the Gregg County Court House but plans to go on to school to become a nurse and paramedic.
