Marion's Story
Life
Its been a long time since High School and my life has taken many twists and turns , but I would do it all again! Most of you may not remember me, I was born in Plainfield but moved away when I was about 10. My family and I did not return to Plainfield until 1979, where I began the 10th grade at Plainfield High School. The Folk name may sound very familiar as I am related to Shawnta Folk, Tosha Folk, Ebonie Folk, Sam Folk and Desire Folk ( fathers side of the family). I am also related to Issac and Micheal Prince on my mother's side of the family.
After high school I decided to go directly to college( William Paterson). After college I joined the military where I served 5 years in the states as well as overseas.
My last duty station Ft Hood Tx is where I met and married my husband of 11 years. In 1995 we had our 1st child (boy)and its been non-stop every since( very active and smart 5 year old). This year I finally realize my dream and started my own business. Houston, Texas is my home, but Plainfield, New Jersey is my 1st love...can't wait for our class reunion!
College
What can I say about College....party, party, party..that was my 1st year. I finally came to my senses the 2nd year and actually made it to class.
I had an interesting group of friends as well as roomates..some of whom I am still in contact till this day.
Military
As Long as I live I will never forget my travels while in the Military! I can still see the sights, hear the sounds, and smell the food.
While stationed in Gelnhausen Germany I made a point of learning to driv...Expand for more
e a stick and test my driving skills on the autobahn. Just image if you can, driving your car at top speed...what a rush! On my off time I tried to see as much of Germany as I could. Then off I went to Greece, Spain and Turkey. My friends thought I was crazy, traveling to different countries all alone, but I understood something they did not. Life is meant to be lived !
After Germany I was transfered to Fort Hood Texas, I was not very happy at Fort Hood in the beginning, but it grew on me. On my off time I would travel to Houston (280 miles away) and visit the Museums, go to musical plays etc...
While stationed at Fort Hood I was shipped off to Saudi Arabia(Riyadh) better known as "Desert Storm" Anyone would be a little apprehensive in a situation such as this...so I had to come to terms with the fact that I joined the Military and this is what we do. War is a terrible thing , I hope one day we can find another way to settle our differences.
Despite the War situation I was able to see a little of the country and meet the people. One thing I remember clearly was the prayer ritual which took place 5 times a day. The Saudi's would stop everything and neel down in prayer. The song/chant was beautiful it seemed so peaceful, yet powerful you could hear it all over the city. I began to look forward to it and came to know it by heart. I inquired about it's meaning and was told it was a call to prayer.
Overall my experiences in the Military were good, I learned a lot about myself and had a chance to see more of the world and how other people live.
