Marjorie's Story

Life Well, I have one child named Leo (age 12). I haven't had the courage to marry and an currently single. I love my work. I am a Social Worker, and, at the moment work for Department of Family and Protective Services-- that is I work for the state department that deals with abuse and neglect of children, elderly and adults with disabilities. My fave work is with mental health with either adults or kids. It keeps me on my toes!!! I live in Georgetown. Bought a house and moved back about seven years ago. I spend much of my time on the house but still have time for friends and family. College Karen Hilgeman from GHS and I roomed together our first year of Southwestern. We were pretty wild and not too motivated academically. We had alot of fun and craziness though. I didn't waste my time on academics while at Southwestern.... I left Southwestern 21 hours from my undergrad-- had I bothered to declare my (secret) major. I didn't want to give up my guidance counselor due to major. Three years later I enrolled in St. Eds. I did great and got my first Social Work degree. Graduated Magna Cum Laude. Pretty good for someone who left GHS in the bottom half (yawn). I worked at Schulz's Beer Garten to get through school. That was hard work but a BLAST. Nothing like seeing pro football pl...Expand for more
ayers buzzed and doing the can-can in the bar. Live music, political, sports and popular celebs meandering through the place. I worked my self into being bartender and learned what real power was. People don't wanna tick off the bartender dontcha know. In 2000, I knew the grant funded job I was doing was ending so I entered grad school at Southwest Texas State U. I went admin track (gag) in Social Work. I had counseled for a long time and wanted to learn some skills to help my clients in case we needed a grant or other administrative tweaking. In order to catch up on the computer (all my work had been in pen and ink while counseling, MHMR couldn't afford to give us computers in the 90's), I got a job at a distant learning network. I learned to work live satelite feed, re-image networked computers and fix basic hardware/software problems on computers so I could catch up with my younger fellow students in Grad school. It didn't hurt that I got paid though. I will brag. I graduated from SWT with some cool honors from grad school. Google if you really care to know. Too bad S Work won't make you rich-- especially in the current economy that doesn't value social services. We laught that our pay sources want to keep us not to far above the wages our clients live on so we can "feel their pain".
