Marjorie's Story

I was Born and raised in Moorhead and graduated from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University. I majored in music education to fulfill my life-long dream: become a band director. (Not many women did back then. I ignored a countless parade of people who said I shouldn't. My parents, however, encouraged me every minute of the way.) After teaching 4 years in a tiny Minnesota town near Alexandria, I attended the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO, and received a master's degree in music education. (Amazing music ed and jazz programs.) I taught in Colorado and then at the base of the Big Horn mountains in Buffalo, WY for four gorgeous years. Breath-taking scenery and a real haven for outdoors people. After teaching 15 years to classes of 60-80 students, my vocal cords wore out. So I studied communications on my own and pursued work in public relations. My start there was as PR director for the St. Paul Winter Carnival (where Vulcans freely kissed women as they rousted about in parades). (Can you say, "Crisis communications"???) But there were opportunities galore there, too. Well before the Internet, I brought over ice carvers from Harbin, China, and snow sculptors from Sverdlovosk, USSR. Ohhhhh, the stories! From there, I worked at a Mpls ad agency for 6 years. I had amazing clients who convinced me ...Expand for more
to start my own business in 1997, Simon & Associates Public Relations. I continue with this part-time. It's been quite a ride. I learn new things daily and am grateful for two fulfilling, diverse careers. I love biking, hiking, canoeing (LOVE the BWCA!), X-country skiing, camping, fishing, Vikings, Twins and NCAA Men's Basketball. Walking around nearby Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis is a favorite of mine. I've volunteered for the Minnesota Orchestra 10 years and have served on a number of non-profit boards dedicated to improving the lives of less-fortunate people. My radio is set to MPR classical music, but I love the great brass bands of the 70s like Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Tower of Power and many more. In fact, this year I had the good fortune to interview James Pankow, trombonist for the rock band, Chicago, for a story I wrote for the Journal of the Association of Concert Band's June issue. What an amazing person Pankow is! We had a two-hour phone conversation. WOW! I still play the drums and am percussion section leader in the City of Lakes Community Band. Check us out on Facebook. I'm wild about Golden Retrievers and Labradoodles. I like Biographies and other non-fiction. And I LOVE life in the Twin Cities, but still feel that I received an exceptional education at Moorhead High School. Always grateful for that.

Quite the extravaganza at Orchestra Hall last night for the season's finale. Mahler's 2nd symphony is after the hearts of brass players and timpanists. Horn players get this: 10 Fr. horns--never seen that before. 10 trumpet
Ahhhhhh, youth sailing classes on Lake Calhoun. They'll learn quickly today with winds kicking in not long after I took the photo. Sailing and summer...doesn't get much better than that.
Youth sailing classes today. Shown are the older students. There are some white caps on the lake today. I wonder how they'll do. The classes are sponsored by The Minneapolis Park Board. Yet another reason why Mpls. Is so of
The treat of a lifetime: a long lunch with the Gruenwald brothers. They were my students when I started teaching fresh out of college. They were super students both academically and musically. Mark, on my left, played trump
Celebrate the start of a new MN Orchestra season. What a program it was: Berlioz, Stravinsky's Firebird, a new violin concerto...WOW. True to form, Osmo's ppppp's were so soft that I actually held my breath for fear that p
OK. So maybe I wasn't fishing for the "Rusty Crayfish" when I hired a guide on Lake Vermillion, and caught 4 of them. The walleyes were small, but with 75 degree temps and glowing fall colors--it was still a great day. BTW,
Employment opportunities abound in Ely. This is part of their annual marketing spoof on April 1.
What’s not to love about autumn in Minnesota?
Did someone say, “TREAT?” Says Oliver. What’s not to love about dog sitting Oliver and Ivy—even if there are a few unchecked bad puppy habits with Ivy. It’s still fun and they are wonderful.
