Mark-Ameen's Story
Greetings! /////
Hmmmmm. All life stories are chaos. I would like to write something that makes sense here, but classmates.com does not allow paragraphs, and I don't want to add further chaos to chaos. Soooooo... I will use five vertical lines as a paragraph break. /////
Let's start again... /////
Greetings! /////
I never thought I would join one of these reunion sites... What has gotten into me? Am I becoming sentimental in my old, uh, middle age? /////
Right on both counts. Age and sentimentality. /////
Let's start with sentimentality. P.S. 104... My fondest memory remains the day half the 7th grade hid in Mr. Gleason's wardrobe for the bulk of his science lesson, then spontaneously burst out laughing, opened the doors, and marched to their seats as if hiding in the wardrobe were simply the most natural thing in the world. That expression of total shock on his face...! I still smirk thinking about it. /////
My best Murrow High School memories? Being in the shows, of course. I can still remember those wonderful bloopers while rehearsing You Can't Take It With You, Fiorello!, Little Mary Sunshine, and our other productions. Let's see... Jaimie's foot got caught in the scrim and he started to go up with it, "Fiorello" could not get the door to open and came in through the window legs first during the scene in which he learns his wife has died, Zandra's hair 'exploded' when her rubber band snapped, we 'FBI agents' used wet paint rollers when we could not find our guns... Oy vey! /////
Speaking of oy veys... I know I was sometimes rude, obnoxious or dismissive when I was in P.S. 104 and Murrow, so please... If y...Expand for more
ou were one of the people I was weird to, accept my apology. I was a brat and a teenager, and I cringe when I recall some of my antics back then. An Amish proverb: "We grow too soon old and too late smart." /////
And for a further oy vey... I should mention that I am not the New York poet Mark Ameen (no hyphen; no Johnson). Every now and then I run into someone from the past and am congratulated for my... poetry (!). Mind you, I wish I could write good poetry, but I have absolutely no talent in that area. /////
I do write, though, and I am passionate about my freelance work as a writer and professional voice overs artist. In addition, as of this year (2014) I have been a professor of English as a Second Language for exactly twenty years, the last nine at NYU. My students keep me young and fill my life with zest. /////
Despite my predictions and dreams, I never did become an actor. I never even tried to become an actor. Still, voice overs allow me to do voice acting and, in a small sense, live that dream. /////
My volunteer work of the last ten plus years has been with teens and twentysomethings who, like me, have OCD. Giving others hope is what I take the most delight in, and I consider my volunteer work as important as my paid work. Anyone who needs help with OCD (or sexual orientation/identity issues or both) is welcome to contact me--even people I have never met before. Send all communication to my name minus hyphens, spaces and capital letters (markameenjohnson) at the large email address that begins with the word "hot." /////
Of course, people I know are also welcome to write and say hello. /////
Warmly,
Mark
