Mark's Story

Hi! Retired! I continue to learn about everything I can, like I did back at MR. Recent learning experiences include watchmaking and flying gliders. Left Long Island for Glendale, Arizona. It's a DRY heat. But so is a 425 degree oven! It's nice to about 110, but don't expect to work outside over 95 or so. Overall it certainly beats LI weather, and might be one of the few parts of the country not subject to extreme weather or earthquakes. But once the kids finish their post docs well likely follow them. Keeping my fingers crossed on where we end up. Currently it is likely I'll be fleeing the heat and going back to the northeast before next summer, pending faculty searches by my daughter. Going to law school (after a BS in Biology- I should have stayed in science and taught in college) kept me on Long Island far too long, where the jobs were. Practicing law was mostly enjoyable until they modified the courts and the insurance companies changed the business, so, after 25 years I went back to school for teaching, at Teachers College, Columbia University. 10 intense months later, I had my Masters in Teaching Chemistry 7-12. Student teaching was even more fun than I expected- good choice! The first couple of year...Expand for more
s were busy, learning how to manage a class as well as learning how to teach most people's least favorite subject, Chemistry. The following years have been spent finding out what works, and what doesn't, for individual concepts in Chem. I never realized how tough we could be on our teachers! Around 2011 I started teaching college level Science Research as well, very satisfying and lots of fun, granting college credit from SUNY Albany. I retired after 12.5 years of teaching, and moved to Arizona for a couple of years, until the kids finalize career location. My daughter has also gone the academic route, and was awarded her doctorate in Cognitive Science at UC Irvine, primarily applying Bayesian statistical methods to the interactions between neurological and behavorial processes and is a postdoc at Berkeley,. Her husband finished his doctorate in neurosciece there, and is doing a postdoc at UC SF.. They had considered settling in California, his home state, but it looks like they will return to the northeast. Emails (ask and I will send the address and cell, the optonline.net address is bad but emails were, unaccountably, not bounced for years) are welcome. I hope things have gone well for you! Regards Mark
