Mark's Story
The Photos: The "Now" photo is my wife, Emily, and me at Logan Pass in Glacier National Park in 2002, the summer we road coast to coast on the tandem. The "Then" photo is Nick Schmelter and me, July 1973, at the Canadian border.
After high school, I received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from UW-Madison, where I played trumpet in the marching band for five years. But I had fun in Antigo during the summers working for the city digging graves and mowing lawns.
In 1979 I was hired by a consulting engineering firm in Eau Claire. They ran short of work in '82 and I enrolled in the MBA program at UWEC.

I married Emily Rogers Smith in Eau Claire in 1998. She's from NYC and works as a Physical Therapist at a local hospital.
Believe it or not, I, who finished next-to-last in the quarter mile in gym class, have completed over 50 triathlons since 1980, bicycled across the country from Virginia to Vancouver on a tandem with Emily, ran the Boston Marathon and completed cross country ski marathons in the U.S. and Europe. By far my proudest achievement was guiding Michele Drolet in 1994 as she became the first blind woman (still only three blind skiers have done it and she's the fastest by far) to ski the American Birkebeiner 55K ski race in Hayward.
I don't play much trumpet anymore; I've switched to guitar (rock and jazz).
Many of my non-working hours are spent making sculptures out of metal and wood.
