Mark's Story

Life I was one of the people who left Howland HS during the time when Warren was going through a difficult time. I left just after my Junior year and finished HS at Sandusky St. Mary's. I still think of Howland as my high school, although I did not graduate from there, but certainly include SMCC as part of that experience. Since I had managed to get in a lot of trouble during Junior High my parents wouldn't let me stay in Warren to graduate, and I don't blame them! I loved playing baseball and I remember a lot of interesting road trips to games with Bill Weltlin, Mark Henderson, and others. Particularly our Juior year when there were no busses for games (levy failures). The nice thing about the baseball team is that no one knows when you have games. I remember getting out of class frequently...sometimes we even had a game! Bill W. would come up and tell our German teacher that we had a game, and we would be gone! As far as other sports memories, I missed a huge tackle against Niles as a Junior on the first kickoff, and we lost. I am probably best remembered at St. Mary's for a fumble which cost us the opportunity to participate in the state playoffs. It seems football wasn't my calling. After HS I attended the U of Toledo, wandering aimlessly among different majors until they handed me a diploma and told me to leave. After discovering that my Biology degree didn't open up many employment opportunities outside of waiting tables (which I actually enjoyed), I returned to Toledo to earn a degree in Pharmacy. The best thing to happen in Toledo was meeting Karen Miller, who for no obvious reason eventually agreed to become my wife, and has managed to put up with me for over 25 years (and counting). We celebrated our 25th anniversary last year by taking a trip without the kids. Very nice! We moved to Columbus, where I attended graduate school, earning a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. From there we settled in Stow, Ohio (between Akron and Cleveland). I worked as a clinical faculty member for Ohio Northern and wo...Expand for more
rked in the ICU for several years while we started a family which eventually included three beautiful and spirited girls. They have kept us busy and entertained, and occasionally terrified, but mostly they have been a source of great joy. About 11 years ago, I took a position with a small medical publishing company (Lexi-Comp, Inc.), leading a group of in-house medical writers and pharmacists. In addition, I have continued to do a little teaching (at Malone and Kent), and I have been active in our church, which is a non-denominational Christian church. Although I grew up in the Catholic church, I became a committed Christian almost 30 years ago, and it has been a remarkable adventure from there. Of interest: our original pastor (Paul Sartarelli) actually grew up in Howland (on Deer Creek Lane) but unfortunately...he went to Kennedy. It's kind of funny...I have had an opportunity to become a writer and an actor, much as I had hoped to do way back in high school, but on a MUCH smaller scale than I had imagined! I'm spending much of my time these days coaching my daughters' softball teams and trying to keep my head above water at work. Karen continues to be a source of wisdom and energy in our home, and working as a water aerobics teacher and as a nurse educator in a facility for children with severe disabilities. Since our older daughters entered high school, I have been busy attending their sporting events (lacrosse and field hockey- two sports that I don't know a thing about!). Both are solid students. We have our first high school graduate and she will continue to play lacrosse in college at Slippery Rock. Our middle daughter is an outstanding student (get that from Mom, not me). Our youngest daughter plays softball and basketball and is a very thoughtful and quiet kid. But when she warms up she can be very funny. She's constantly reading and can't wait to be a teenager. Her Mom and Dad wouldn't mind waiting a couple of years. I'd love to hear from some of my old classmates sometime. Send a message!
