Mark's Story

Life Pilot and mystery author Mark W. Danielson grew up in El Cerrito, California where F-106 fighters flying overhead sparked his interest in aviation. He started flying at age 13, soloed on his 16th birthday, and earned his Commercial Pilot’s License on his 18th after graduating from John F. Kennedy high school. In 1974, Mr. Danielson was awarded a BA degree from the University of Northern Colorado where he also received his Air Force commission as a Distinguished Graduate. After completing Air Force pilot training in Phoenix, Arizona, he went on to fly the F-4 Phantom II fighter with the 80th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Kunsan AB, Korea. In 1978, he was selected as the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing’s Junior Officer of the Quarter and “top gun” of its Operational Readiness Inspection. He later served as a T-38 advanced instructor-pilot in Lubbock, Texas, where he finished building his 300 hp Steen Skybolt bi-plane. He separated from the Air Force in January, 1980 to pursue a civilian pilot career. Following two years of numerous lackluster flying jobs, Mark returned to military service, this time wearing a U.S. Navy uniform. He earned his MA degree while serving as a jet-strike flight instructor in Beeville, Texas. This tour led to a full-time reserve position as an A-4 adversary instructor at Miramar Naval Air Station where he graduated from TOPGUN in 1987. After eight consecutive years in the Skyhawk teaching fighter pilots air-to-air combat, CDR Danielson oversaw the establishment of the nation’s first true Joint Reserve/Guard Base in Fort Worth, Texas. Mark dedicated much of his military career to aviation safety, including his membership on several mishap investigation teams. First published in 1978, he wrote countless articles for the US Navy for Proceedings, Mech, Approach, and Safetyline magazines. His engaging articles earned him recognition as Approach magazine's Contributor of the Year, and he was twice named the Navy's top author. Following a long career writing non-fiction periodical articles, Mr. Danielson began writing reality-based fiction novels. Danger Within was released in 2002, The Innocent Never Knew, 2004. Bay Area story, Dialblo's Shadow, followed in 2008. As an active member in the Mystery Writers of America, he has participated in numerous author events, including the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, Men of Mystery, Barnes and Noble Mystery Authors Night, Cutting Edge Murder, Hi-Jinks on the High Seas, and Kids Love a M...Expand for more
ystery. He has been a pilot with FedEx pilot since 1995 and is currently a captain flying the MD-11 around the world. His interests include spending time with his wife, writing, hiking, fine arts, tennis, and restoring cars and boats. His varied experience and travel is evident in his writing. He currently lives in Denver, Colorado. markwdanielson.com I always wanted to be a pilot when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right. I write a story. Creative wrting is a great venue to direct energy that would otherwise be wasted. Dean Koontz is one of the greatest gentleman I've had the pleasure to meet. Though a tremendously successful fiction writer, he has never forgotten where he came from, and always remains personable and witty. He is a true role model for any fiction writer. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Dan Rihn, because we remain lifelong buds. Parenting has allowed me to experience unimaginable highs and lows, had I never had children. If I won $100 million, I'd give the majority of it to my favorite charities, then spend the rest on paying off my home, settinng some aside for savings and take my wife on a vacation. My current age is 58. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be too old to function. I was so completely wrong. Retiring from my airline job will allow me to write full time. I look forward to that. My best friend would tell you I'm happily married, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as successful. I enthusiastically traded my military uniform for an airline uniform. I share my home with my loving wife and dog, which I find blissful.. Outstanding Student Pilot Award, USAF pilot training, Junior Officer of the Quarter (8th Tactical Fighter Wing), Named US Navy's top safety author, 1992,93, Approach Magazine's Contributor of the Year, (2) 1st place trophies for building the best tube/fabric airplane, several 1st place car trophies. Dan Rihn and I have known each other since 1955. He lived a few doors down and I soon became a member of his family. His father was my second father, flight instructor, medical doctor, and mentor. Dan and I grew up flying and building airplanes together. My life would be completely different had we never met. My first job was at The Richmond Independent, where I got paid 30 dollars a month to deliver newspapers. What I remember most about it is a great job for kids that no longer exists today..
