Mark's Story
I never did graduate from Flag Hi, even though I attended thru 1965 (including Flag Jr High). I wound up in a military school for my senior year in Melbourne, FL. Quite an experience as I learned to fly a Piper Cub airplane and even got some solo hours in. Developed an inner ear problem which took me out of the pilot's seat.
Tried NAU after high school, never seemed to make it to many classes. I've about 16 hours so far, mostly thru Pima Community College in Tucson; still working on getting the required courses out of the way before truly deciding on a major. Since I've turned 60 and retired going to school has moved way down the priority list. It is nice to know my brain cells weren't all destroyed during the 70's and 80's.
US Army 1969 and 1970 and after that the years were mostly "lost". I "came to" in 1995 and began to participate in life; became employable and went to work at the VA Hospital in Tucson doing veteran eligibility and enrollment.
After the wars began in Afghanistan, Iraq and some of the other 30 places around the world that are considered "hostile fire zones", as part of my job I began assisting the returning vets in plodding thru the red tape of s...Expand for more
igning up for their health care with the VA. One of the most rewarding things I've ever had the privilege to participate.
I also met and, after about 4 years of dating, married an absolutely wonderful lady, Margaret.
Was diagnosed with a fairly severe illness and began treatments for same in August 2006; after a couple of months of the treatments it became apparent that I would not be able to complete the treatments and work too, so I took a medical retirement.
Completed the treatments July 2007 and they were successful, which is absolutely AWESOME because I sure would not want to have to try and go thru them again. I'm about 60% back to normality now and toying with the idea of going back to work.
However, retirement agrees with me, trying to learn how to hit a golf ball and get my score under 100. Haven't been successful at that yet. I also work with some people in recovery from addiction which takes up most of my time.
I've run across a few of my classmates from Flag Hi and it has been great to see them, keeping in touch with a couple of them. Would love to hear from others who might be interested in getting in touch and sharing some memories.
God Bless you all.
