Mark's Story
Life
Updated March 2007
Hi, I'm Mark
I am a 43 years old Tennessee (southern US state) native. I am and have always been single. I lived in Kingsport, Tennessee until I was 20. Since then, I have lived in Southern California (mainly Thousand Oaks in Ventura County) for almost 7 years, and then I lived in the Bay Area for close to another 10 years. I lived in Fremont in the East Bay and Belmont on the Peninsula. But, for most of my SF area time, I lived in San FranciscoÂs Richmond District, just a few blocks north of Golden Gate Park. Unlike most, I loved living in both the Bay Area and Southern California.
In 2003, I left the San Francisco area and moved north to Vancouver, British Columbia. I live in the Yaletown neighborhood in downtown Vancouver.
Professionally, I am an executive producer in the entertainment software industry. Fancy terminology for I develop video games. Or I guess these days, I mostly take credit for the work of the very talented people that work for me. They rule! I am currently working for Electronic ArtÂs Canada. I have been here for three years and I love it.
As for personal taste;
I have varied taste in music from jazz to metal. Current favorites are Sublime, Social Distortion, and Ben Harper.
I love reading. My favorite authors are James Baldwin and Jack Kerouac.
As for America's seemingly favorite pastime, attending movies, I do not really enjoy the experience. In the last few years, I have only gone to a theater to see two movies. I have to confess though; I have a bit of a DVD habit. I like movies. I just do not like sitting in a big dark room and keeping my trap shut for two hours.
Of course, I have a passion for computer/video games. So yes, I have a streak of geekiness. But the nearly 20 years I have spent working on video games have been the creatively most fulfilling of my life.
Socially, friends make the world go around. I have great friends in San Francisco and I have made some great new friends in Vancouver. The Friday night crew is more of a drinking group. You will usually find us at the Lennox Pub in the early part of the evening and maybe at the Morrissey a little later on. We used to frequent the Granville Room...Expand for more
but not so much any more.
Saturdays tend to be a little mellower. We used to always pick a new restaurant and give it a try but recently, Saturdays have been more about folks coming to my place for a DVD and a bite to eat.
In the summers, we shop like crazy.
Another passion is travel. I try to take some time each summer and get out of the country, pick a place and go. Since I have been in Vancouver, most of my travel has been for work. But that can be cool too. For some reason, I do not take photos when I travel for work. I really should.
Physically, I am tall (6'3), sandy/brown hair, green cat's eyes, and a normal build. I am neither a Brad Pitt nor a hunchback.
Of course, you can see pics of me on the site.
Oh, I almost forgot. Here are a few loose ends.
I love beer. Boddington's is my all time favorite
The key to happiness is great friends (which I have) and great family (which I also have). I have the world's best mom. It also doesn't hurt that I have the world's greatest step dad too. Go Darryl!!!
My favorite quote is "If at first you do not succeed, try try again".
Hmmm, and I love baseball. I always wanted to work on a baseball video game. I was able to do this for five years leading the development of High Heat Baseball while I was working at 3DO. And now that I am EA, I have even been able to work on MVP NCAA 2007. And just about every other sport known to man! Over the last year, that included NBA Live 07 CG, FIFA 07 CG, ChampionÂs League CG, March Madness 07 CG, Cricket 07, and Madden Wii.
Have a good one and hope to hear from you,
Mark
Workplace
In my early years, I worked at Wendy's (in both Tennessee and California). I also worked at Jack in the Box and Naugles. I did retail at The Wherehouse and some odd-jobs like refereeing paintball. However, in the mid to late 80's, I settled into making videogames which developed from hobby into full career.
My career in games started as an artist and evolved through art direction into production. I have worked for small companies (ie Creative Insights), medium sized companies (ie The 3DO Company), and am now working as an Executive Producer for Electronic Arts Canada.
