Mark's Story

1980's I started traveling for work this decade. I always had the wander lust so I hit the road. I was building Supercuts salons for my moms business, in the early 80's I lived Maryland, Arizona and Florida. After the Supercuts, I went to work for a company building retaining walls. Myself and 3 friend went homeless for the next 3 years. We traveled around the country from city to city building our walls. We lived in hotels and a job would last 6 to 14 weeks and then on to the next city. It was 3 years of very hard work and even harder partying. I got injured in early 1987, it turned out to be career ending. I spent the last 3 years of the decade going through 2 operations, rehabilitation, chronic pain control clinics and retraining. I have a 25% disability rating from this. In the end, this was the best thing that ever happened to me because it made me look at myself and say "Now What?". The Now What I came up with was even more fun and wild then the 80's. 1990's The Now What I decided on was Scuba Diving. I was already a certified divemaster and I thought I would move to the Florida Keys to ply my new trade. During the summer of 89, I was in school for part of my retraining when my mom called. Mom was also a scuba dive and had recently returned from a dive trip out of the country on a live aboard dive boat. She asked me "What would I think about doing my "Dive Thing" in Indonesia. I had to get a globe to see where Indonesia was. She also asked if I would like to take a 7 week trip there to check it out. I don't remember my exact answer but i know it included references to birds flying, fish swimming and poop stinking. The trip turned out to be 2 weeks of scuba diving on a live aboard dive boat, 2 weeks in Bali and 3 weeks in North Sulawesi. I was so jazzed that I agreed to move to Indonesia, supervise the contruction of a resort, train the local staff, open the resort and then manage it. I returned to the U.S. and enrolled in Golden Gate University and studied Hotel and Restaurant Management. The adventure began when I moved to Bitung, North Sulawesi Indonesia to start the resort in April of 1991. Here are some of the highlights from that time. It took 3 years to build the resort and train the staff, we opened in April of 1994. The name of the resort is Kungkungan Bay Resort (KBR for short) and it is a scuba diving resort. I had my first marriage during the early 90's. She was half Chinese and half Spanish and she was from Singapore. The marriage lasted 3 1/2 years...Expand for more
. It was practice. I traveled in Asia a lot during this time. I have been to Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Mynmar (Burma), Taiwan, South Korea (DMZ with North Korea), Japan. I met my real wife in late 95 and we got married in January of 2000. My wife "Rina" is Indonesian and she was born on a small island in the Pacific Ocean. We will have been together for 13 years come September. The resort and the area we built it in could not have been better. The resort is located in the "Lembeh Strait" in our own private bay. The diving in the strait was so weird and wonderful and we called it "Muck Diving" and we made it a household name in the diving industy. The strait is acknowledged as the number one destination in the world for Underwater Macro Photography, if you want weird alien looking creatures then come dive with us. We have had all the best underwater photograghers to the resort. There has been more articles written about our resort and the Lembeh Strairt then any dive resort in history, over 250 to date. We were even in National Geographic in 06. In 1997 I started commuting between the U.S. and Indonesia. I would spend 2 months in our U.S. office then go spend the next 2 months at the resort. I got a lot of frequent flyer miles thoses years. 2000's I offically moved back to the U.S. and started paying taxes again in 2000. I got married in Las Vegas (second time) in January of 2000. My wife and I adopted our daughter in April of 2001 and we brought her to the U.S. in February of 2002. We decided to live in Concord (close to my office) as I refused to commute on Hwy 4 from the east county. I was gone for the building boom of the 90's and when I got back traffic really sucked everywhere. We bought a new house in Concord and moved in in May of 03. This housing track had very small lots with 2 storey houses. My backyard was 13 feet deep from door to fence. My mom pointed out one day that there were 23 windows that looked down into my backyard! I could not take it after getting that little tidbit of information. We sold that house in September of 04 and moved in December. We bought a ranch in Northern California and that is where we live now. My house in Concord had a 3500 sqft lot, My new house has more sqft under roof then my old lot and we have 400 acres with oak covered hills and I live right in the middle. If you interested in seeing what we did, you can type the resort name into any search engine and you can find our web site. That is all for now Mark
