Mark's Story
Life
After a successful career in Silicon Valley, my wife and I decided to take our newborn daughter to see the world and relocated to the United Kingdom in 2001. Today, you will often find me going to a museum in London with my eight year old daughter, hiking around English historic estates with my wife, or volunteering at the church to lead our fair trade drive.
I miss California, but the opportunity to see the world was too hard to resist. Now, my wife and I have the chance to visit 50 countries between us. Living in Europe is a nice experience for my daughter, who is growing up a true British kid. Hearing her wonderful accent amuses my family and friends back in the USA.
School
My school days were some of my fondest memories. I enjoyed the friendships there and crazy times. I attended the schools in Palo Alto, California, including Walter Hays Elementary School, Jordan Junior High School, and both Palo Alto High School and Gunn High School. Midway through my high school tenure, my family moved from Palo Alto to Los Altos Hills where I enjoyed horseback riding and getting to know the beautiful countryside around the Bay Area.
College
After leaving high school, I moved to San Luis Obispo, California, and attended Cal Poly State University there. I loved it on the central coast, enjoying good weather, fun times at school, and a more relaxed environment than the hussle and bussle of the Bay Area. AFter graduating, I had a six year career in the media business working for some of the largest publications in the USA. This experience helped me to understand how businesses succeed and leverage media exposure to become market leaders. Later, I moved back to the Bay Area working for the San Jose Business Journal before returning to school. I attended graduate school at Santa Clara University and earned a MBA. I graduated with honours and was recognised as the most Âdynamic, innovative, and creative graduate of my class.

vering exceptional growth. I am responsible for US$300 million in revenue from small and medium sized businesses. It is one of the largest and fastest growing segments for the company, growing 40% last year. The market opportunities in this emerging market region are extraordinary. My team runs one of the largest ICT event series in Europe with 10,000 attendees over 13 countries. We were recently recognised in our company with an award for one of the best marketing plans worldwide.
It is exciting being a part of emerging markets of Europe like Poland, Czech Republic, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, and others. There is great opportunity in these high growth markets as they continue to improve the business culture towards an efficient free-market. This ÂNew Europe will be a very dynamic environment for many years to come and represents a good place for companies to do business in. Having worked in Silicon Valley, California, and around the world gives me some unique insights into these opportunities.
My career at Cisco has been a wonderful experience working around the world. I started in Silicon Valley with the company and had the opportunity to be at the heart of the rapid technology transformation of the late 1990s. My role was leading large development teams to build some of the worldÂs leading e-commerce applications that today handle tens of millions of dollars worth of electronic transactions each day. I worked with our customers around the world in Asia, Latin America, and Europe, in addition to the U.S. and North America.
Prior to my career with Cisco Systems, I led Internet marketing for Adaptec, another high technology firm based in California. During my time in Silicon Valley, I attended graduate school at Santa Clara University and earned a MBA. I graduated with honours and was recognised as the most Âdynamic, innovative, and creative graduate of my class. Before entering graduate school, I had a six year career in the media business working for some of the largest publications in the USA. This experience helped me to understand how businesses succeed and leverage media exposure to become market leaders.
