Mark's Story

Life After the navy as a mechanic I got into diving for sea urchins. Collecting sea urchins from the ocean bottom is like gathering easter eggs only it is accomplished by swimming around the ocean bottom and putting them in a bag and floating the bag of urchins to the surface and loading them onto a boat. I dive all over California to depths to 100 ft. With my 30' boat the "Black Mariah" I currently am working out of San Francisco doing marine salvalge. I am a first responder and monitor the marine radio listening for boaters whol get into trouble. When these distress calls come in over the radio I make the decision as to wether to start up my boat and run on the case. If a boat breaks down I tow them, if they are sinking I do my best to keep them from sinking, and if they sink I dive down and raise the boat. Sometimes I save their lives or recover their bodies. r lost items such as gold, silver, or lost geological equipment. I also film underwater documenting sharks, fish, or shipwrecks. When not much is going on I clean boat bottoms or remove nets and line that get into the propellers of fishing boats. I am on call 24 hours a day and get calls of all types. I never know what might be asked of me. I live in the most beautiful part of the coast (Gods country) about 1 and a half hours north of Bodega Bay with my wife Sharon. We live in a nice house with several redwood trees and a large grassy yard that I mow when I am lucky enough to be home. I spend most of my time at Fishermens Wharf in San Francisco and stay on my boat listening for distress calls. My chocolate lab keeps me company while I am away from the wife. The dog is also my crew member and is occasionally called upon to swim a line into a beached boat that needs to be hauled of the beach.
