Mark's Story

LIFE: Attended Brigham Young University and 8 other Universities since graduation; Has 3 degrees. Served as missionary in Mexico. Served in USMC during Vietnam era. Became High School Counselor in Nevada and joined Nevada Army National Guard and was called to active duty. Retired from U.S.Army in 1994 after 20 years as a Chaplain; I saw too much of my share of violence and crisis intervention and man's inhumanity to man and have become a bit calloused and hardened. Before and after my Chaplaincy, I also have 20 years as Educational Psychologist, School Counselor and Teacher (Special Education, Psychology, Spanish, Journalism) I have now lived 35 yrs in Washington State, 8 yrs in Nevada. My transitional employments included landscaping, construction, factory, grocery, farm, gas station, bus driver, military policeman, private security work, cowboy, Journalist, Hospital Administrator, Director of Public Relations, Job Developer, Counselor, Chaplain, Teacher (college, high school, middle and elementary schools). Married 21 yrs, 6 children, divorced in 1995. Worked and lived semi- reclusive lifestyle in remote, isolated desert and mountain areas in Nevada. In 2003, I followed an old cowboy tradition and married a young, "mail order bride" after 3 trips to the Philippines. She didn't like my cowboy, wilderness lifestyle. Cosmopolitan critter that I am, I adjusted accordingly and returned to the lush greenery and water environment of the northwest, in Washington. Surprise, surprise, in 2009 she returned to the Philippines, left me and I am single again. I bought a house in Puyallup and continue as a Special Education Teacher in elementa...Expand for more
ry school. I really don't fit and I'm in trouble daily because of my political incorrectness and common sense approaches to discipline and education. I learn that diversity is valued only when it is within certain categories. I often felt like a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. In 2010, after years of being a representative of a diversity and opinions which are not appreciated in public schools, I "retired" but hope it is only a temporary condition. I have done some consulting as a Military Family Life Consultant at Ft. Lewis (Army Base.) That was a perfect assignment for my experience. I worked with military kids whose parents are deployed to war. It was a good fit and I became enmeshed into their lives, families, schools and the military community, to the point that some single, female, civilian, school teachers started to take issue with my advocacy, pro military opinions and comments and I found myself in trouble again. I am now involuntarily "retired" again. I may be an unconventional, controversial loner and occassionally it bothers me but I accept it and deal with it. Hoooah! Accept my best wishes. I am happily remarried in 2018., In June 2021 We had a housefire which destroyed all our possessions, burned me, and killed my wife by smoke inhalation and heart attack, I am recovered and living in a trailer waiting reconstruction of my home. In November of 2022 I moved back into my newly renovated and upgraded home...and am loving it......busy pruning, restoring, re energizing, enjoying the fruit trees, berry bushes and multiple garden items which I planted over the years here and which survived my absence.
