Mark's Story

Life I have always been fond of my high school years; in fact, I value my friends from the time I was born. Today, I am fortunate to have my earliest friend - Joey Stoddard as a "neighbor" in nearby Pasadena CA. He lived around the corner from me on Kit Carson and we met at the Woodlawn Shopping Center when we were 4 years old. Next came Chris LaForge, who moved in a few doors down from Joey (Joey's family moved after 7th grade at Euclid) and we became friends at that time. Chris and I met up with the "Newton crowd" around the summer of '69 -- met the likes of Charlie Burton (passed away 5/09), Jim Stone and Gary Bang (whose dad worked with my dad at United Airlines). And so that wonderful summer between Jr. High and AHS delivered great music and a lot of sun at the Southglen pool. High school started and I immediately broke my back playing football and Mr. Sigler flunked me in Geometry even though I missed about a month. Go figure. Asshole. Anyway, Jim, Charlie and I joined Key Club. Gary ... well Gary kinda joined up with John Russell, Don Ewy and friends and did their thing. Even then, I would spend the night at Gary's house and we would sneak out his bedroom window and meet a bunch of girls at the bridge that connected Orchard Rd. with Cherrywood Circle. We would most likely be drunk (on a few beers) and would end up puking at some point that night. I was involved with the people who DIDN'T get in to the Jethro Tull concert at Red Rocks. It was cool, but some asshole with a bugle charged the crowd into the police and that was all she wrote: teargas. Red Rocks wasn't the same after that. Sorry! At any rate, I was on the cusp of cliques. Wasn't a jock but wasn't a nerd either. Don't know what you would call me. There were a bunch of Claudia's and a bunch of Mark's in our clique. When I started AHS ...Expand for more
as a Soph, Kathi Holland ('73) was my g/f. Later, Karen Gerlich ('72 and current History teacher at AHS)was my g/f during our Jr. and Sr. years. Karen was a cheerleader (matmaid) and I was kinda hippy freak. Prom was interesting. She was Queen and I was in yellow tennis shoes and danced to Color My World by Chicago before leaving. That was pretty much it for us, and we went our separate ways after graduating. I still talk to both Karen and Kathi today. I finished my education at CU Denver Center in '82 - 10 years after graduating from HS. By the way, I had gotten married in '80 and divorced in '83. Gary Bang married my ex-wife a year later after getting divorced from Cindi (Rodden AHS '74). Small world. Those two are no longer married today and we remain very close friends. I remarried in '84 to Maureen and relocated to Long Beach CA. We had 2 boys, Kyle (born '88) and Brett (born '90). I started with United Airlines while going to school and transferred to Cedar Rapids and then to Chicago before returning to Denver to work on my first startup company. This company later was purchased by Delta Airlines. In the early 90's, I left for another startup in Austin TX. I started a travel auction which eBay purchased in '96. After a couple more dotcoms, I burned out, cut off the soles of my shoes and learned to play the fiddle. In 2005 my mother died; in 2006 dad passed and my marriage failed again. I lost my passion in real estate and founded InkPeace. Now I push buttons to have remanufactured toner delivered to schools and government, Having coordinated our 30 yr. reunion, I will never do it again (because it turned out so different from what I had in mind) and look forward to the 40th. Well, I did it again. 40th reunion I chaired and it went well. Signing off. You can reach me mark at tenspotz dot com.
