Mark's Story

I'm finally getting around to doing this. Living in Chicago since 1969, when I came out to attend grad school at Northwestern University for my Ph.D. I taught, then worked for the City of Chicago for 27 years. Most of that time, I served as Executive Director of the Police Board, the agency that holds disciplinary hearings in cases of Chicago police accused of misconduct. Lots of stories from that! I retired from that in 2004. I've also taught at Northwestern, part time (while at the Police Board), then full time (starting in '04), again part time. I'll retire in June 2022. Married for 44 years, my wife Micki, a skilled anthropologist/ger...Expand for more
ontologist, died two years ago. Our older son and his family (three grandkids) live near Philadelphia. Our younger boy, severely handicapped, died suddenly at age 14.. Through him, we were active in Keshet, an organization providing educational and recreational services for Chicago's Jewish families with special needs kids. A couch potato as a kid, through JMHS and Brooklyn College, I took up running in 1969, have kept at it ever since, including five marathons. That exercise was probably crucial in my surviving COVID - hospitalized for all of April, 2020 - a VERY close call. That is the past 50+ years in one slightly run-on paragraph.
