Mark's Story

Mark is from Chicago, Illinois. Mark's schools include St. Laurence High School. Mark later attended Northwestern University (BSJ, Political Science, History, Journalism), the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (MA, History), the University of Minnesota (MPA, Public Affairs), and the University of Arkansas, (Ed.D., doctorate in higher education administration). After graduating St. Laurence, Mark served in the U.S. Marine Corps, from 1968-72, in helicopter squadrons. He also was assigned to the White House Presidential Security Detail, guarding Air Force One at MCAS El Toro as President Richard Nixon resided at the Western White House in San Clemente, California. Mark retired after 35 years in public higher education in 2020, after having worked, studied, or graduated from 9 different universities. He retired as a Vice President-Emeritus at the University of Central Oklahoma serving metropolitan Oklahoma City. Mark and his wife Linda will return to their home in west-central Wisconsin, near Minneapolis-St. Paul, in the future after selling their home in suburban OKC. They also spend time in Bend, Oregon, in a home they co-own with their son amid the Cascade Mountains, and at Mark’s late in-laws’ home in Decatur, Illinois. Mark remains active as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Central Oklahoma coordinating a dozen faculty and external partners on suicide etiology research and exploring mitigation strategies to reduce ideation and suicide among veterans. the Boards of several non-profits that aid disabled or destitute veterans. He has received numerous university, foundations and state awards for his leadership mentoring student veterans as well as improving veteran access to health care. Music Mark likes includes George Gershwin, Arlo Guthrie, Erik Satie. Books Mark likes include Class of 1846, Outliers, The Civil War. Movies Mark likes include The Shawshank Redemption, Lawrence of Arabia, The Music Man. TV shows Mark likes include Game of Thrones, Rome, Deadwood, Midsomar Murders. One of Mark's favorite quotes is: “The moral test of government is how it treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the aged; and those in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy, and the handicapped.” Senator Hubert Humphrey Mark’s brother is Bob Kinders, ‘66, who is an internationally recognized cancer researcher. Bob retired in 2020 as the chief scientist under contract to the National Cancer Institute at Fort Derrick, MD. He continues to consult on cancer research for NCI on a part-time basis. After graduating from Loyola, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam in 1971-72. After his discharge he earned a Master’s in environmental biology from Loyola University and a doctorate in cancer research from Kansas State University. He is one of the most highly published and cited cancer researchers internationally. He and his wife Pat live in Walkersville, MD.
