Mark's Story

OK, it has been a very long time since I have been in this website, do most of my talking and communicating thru FB. So here is the update, since I last visited here I was like on 5IM finishes. In 2015 I made a decision to go from 7 IM finishes to 12IM finishes as fast as I could to qualify for the Hawaiian IRONMAN World Championship. I did that with 5 IM finishes in 24 months, went from 7 to 12 and then registered for Hawaii. Ended up doing two more IM races to meet validation so I sit on 14 finishes now. I will take it, 14 for 14 finishes. So, stupid virus hit and cancelled this years race BUT I have re-accepted the invite to race in 2021 in Kona Hawaii. So if you remember, next October 9th you can follow my progress in Kona as I race to try to get an PR of better than 13:22 finish. This race is and will kick my butt big time, but I am ready for it. Training now ( 2020 Sept ) pretty heavy and will do a 52 week push into Kona. The whole time I will be racing in Kona I will be smiling knowing I will be racing with the WORLD's fastest athletes. 140.6 miles across Hawaii. In 2019 there were roughly 93K athelets around the world who raced and finished an IRONMAN race. Out of those 93K, only 2200 get to race Hawaii. I am fortunate and honored to be one of those next year. If you want to get in touch...…..ping me on FB. UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE 2020 was cancelled, 2021 was cancelled, 2022 ( Feb ) was cancelled and finally in Oct 2022 I went out and finally got back to Kona for the World Championships. 2022 was a decent year of training, spent 2 weeks in Hawaii training in Kona and Honolulu to get myself ready. Training went well back home and I had to send my bike out 1 month before the race.....big mistake. My old racing bike was so uncomfortable that more than 3 hours in the saddle was painful. This really compromised my last month of training and pre-race setup. Me, I rather be on the edge for racing, meaning I would have felt better to push the hard tra...Expand for more
ining up the day I left for Kona. Arrive Kona, go to several banquets, no race jitters at all, felt relaxed and ready to go. Woke up on Oct 6th, walked into town at 4:30am, got registered, set bike up and then waited for my wave to start. Never once got nervous like races in the past. Got in the water, setup perfectly, gun goes off, off for a 2.4 mile swim in the pacific ocean. Way way cool racing in the IRONMAN World Championships. Got out of the water in 1:29, not bad. The bike, long day on the bike for the 112 mile bike ride to Hawi and back. There is no where to hide, no shade trees, just heat and wind and an incredible view of the pacific ocean and Maui. Came in off the bike and both hamstrings went to full cramp. Oh s*&t, I was in deep deep trouble now. Damn, cramps. Got into the tent changed into my run gear and prep myself for a long night on the dark Hawaiian roads in the lava fields. Would not trade for anything.........so sureal. Started the marathon with legs that were completely toast from the cramps. I was now in survival mode. At about M5 my legs left me and I was reduced to quitting or speed walk it in. If you know me, quitting.....yeah right, that is not in my play book at all. Put that thought aside and got the feet going. The whole time I thought I was not going to make cutoff at 17 hours, really nervous but at M19 I knew I was going to make but I was in serious pain, but pushed thru. Finally made the last turn on Ali'i Drive and knew I was in. Alot of emotions came out at the finish, I may looke goofy but not many people get that chance to cross that finish line in Hawaii. I got it in and with a 16:13 finish. So that is 15 for 15 IRONMAN racing and I will take a few years off and then start again. Next goal is to qualify to go back to Kona and raced but at 70+. Yep, you heard it, 70+ age group. That will put me close to 40 years of multisport racing. You are now update and until 2030 when I will try to qualify with the old guys LOL
