Mark's Story
Life
Looking back on the last 4 years is like being in a whirlpool...especially this past year. I think I'm a very different person than I was in HS, that's what I've been told anyway. College was GREAT and I wish I could go back. Now I'm back in the public schools as a K-12 teacher. Hinsdale, NY is where I teach. It's right outside of Olean. It's not my dream job or town (very small, not diverse at all, not much to do on my free time), so I don't know how long I'll be here. I student taught and had the time of my life in NYC and may think about moving back sometime to work there...we'll see what happens with that!
College
MISS IT MISS IT MISS IT! Had (and still have) a great group of friends, got a great education, had many wild wild nights, I think I had the perfect college experience. I went to Fredonia to study music education, my instrument being piano. My dream is to play professionally, but that's pretty tough to make a living off of, so I decided to take the safe route. Had a very successful junior recital and went for concerto competition but lost my senior year. Oh well, can't say I didn't try. Greatest decision I made while I was there was to student teach in NYC, where I was payed a st...Expand for more
ipend to live in Brooklyn and teach at an elementary school in the theatre district and LaGuardia HS (the school FAME! is based after!). Met a great group of friends while there who want me to move back to get an apartment and teach there with them. Very tempting, we'll see.
Workplace
Currently working at Hinsdale Central School, right outside of Olean, NY, where I live alone in an apartment. I get lonely sometimes being 2 hours away from all of my friends and family, but work keeps me so busy that I don't have time to even think about it. I like the job, though no one prepared me in college for many of the things a first year teacher goes through. Stacks and stacks of paperwork and forms, lesson plans, report cards, budgets, etc. take a lot of time and energy, then of course there are the kids! I teach K-6 general music classes (remember them?), I have a junior high school chorus, and a senior high chorus. There are only 35-40 kids in each grade level and it's a tiny school. I think I've done a good job because the kids and faculty like and respect me. It's very tiring teaching all day, and many days I have to bring out my acting skills because I'm so tired or stressed. Luckily I'm good at acting!
