Mark's Story

Life Life... Born in Cheyenne. Grew up in Cheyenne. Quit school less than 2 months before graduation (...seemed like a good idea at the time...oh well...). Got GED (even before my class had graduated!)and went off to see what I could see in the Coast Guard. (Saw a lot.) Got married in 1979. Adopted my oldest daughter in 1982. Son born in 1989. Left Coast Guard after amost 14 years in 1990 and became a cop in Marin County to see what I could see and do what I could do. (Saw a lot, did a lot.) Second daughter born in 1991. End of marriage in 1995. Made Sergeant in 1996. Left Marin in 2003 for a job with the University of California as a resident police officer at the Lick Observatory on Mt. Hamilton just outside San Jose. (Cool job, great fringe benefits - like I've got a 120 inch telescope right outside my back door!). Currently living full time with my 30-something year old Moluccan Cocatoo (Rhiannon) and my 8-month old Macaw (Casseopia aka Cassie) and part-time with my 2 youngest. Life is good. School School... Was a dork. Had a blast (most of the time) anyway. Great friends, gigantic crushes. Any regrets? Yup. Change anything if I could? Surely. Spend much time regretting the past? Nope. Do it all again, even if I couldn't change a thing? You betcha...things worked out just fine. College College... Huh? Oh, yeah...nothing as an official "college student". Lots of credits at lots of institutions of higher learning, mainly through professional development. Met the requirements for my A.S./A.A. many moons ago, and am short only a few credits for a B.A./B.S. Just don't care enough about a piece of paper to put it all together. Works for me, anyway! Workplace Work... Had a blast in the Coast Guard (see "military"), but somehow always knew that there was somethin' else out there for me. I put myself through the Police Academy while still in the 'Guard, and knew right away that 'ol Uncle Sam would be looking for a replacement for me very soon. I worked as a reserve officer in San Anselmo (Marin County) for a few months, and when my enlistment was up, I took a full time job as a patrolman. I made Sergeant a few years later, and also worked as a detective for a while (fun stuff, but being on the street was where I belonged). Then one night a couple of years ago, I saw a recruitment flyer for a job as a resident officer at a University ...Expand for more
of California observatory. After thinking long and hard for all of 2 minutes, I applied for the job and 2 months later I was living on the top of a mountian overlooking the Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay. I work out of my house (built in 1921), set my own hours, get my own car (SUV actually), and see my boss once every couple of months. I'm a cop, a fish & game warden, a fireman, and an EMT, all rolled into one. Great sunrises, greater sunsets, and a view of the night sky that some people will never see. All in all, pretty good job. Oh yeah, and I still get to say "Press hard, three copies" as much as I want! Military Military... Boot camp in Alameda, Ca. First duty station - a ship homeported in San Francisco. Patrols in the Bearing Sea and Gulf of Alaska. Loved really rough weather, just wished I could swim! Six months later I spent six months in New York City at my rating specialty school (I became a Gunner's Mate...arrgh matey!), then was stationed aboard a cutter in Boston. More long patrols and rough weather. I was on one of the first teams to board a Russian vessel at sea when the new 200 mile fisheries limit came into effect. Saw a lot of Northeast Canada and all of the eastern seaboard. Went to Cuba, and Haiti. Drug patrols in the Carribean. From Boston I went to a cutter in Homer, Alaska. Big storms, good times. Saw a lot of the Bering Sea and made two cruises to Hawaii in a 180' boat. From there I was sent to Long Beach, Ca. where I worked as an assistant marine inspector and oil pollution investigator. After 6 months in Long Beach, my boss forced me to transfer to a sattelite office in Santa Barbara, where I spent almost 3 years. I made E-6 while in Santa Barbara, then was transferred back to San francisco for another 2 years of sea duty. Spent time in Panama and Columbia and had a blast doing drug enforcement. From there I took a shore job with a training team and travelled all over the west coast (including Alaska and Hawaii) teaching boarding procedures and law enforcement at Coast Guard stations. After that I went to the west coast training center in Petaluma, Ca. as an instructor. That's where I was when I decided to move on and do something else with my life. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the Coast Guard. I did and saw things I never imagined myself doing or seeing. No regrets, just time to move along. Been there, done that.
