Mark's Story

Life To do a quick summary, I’ve; Built two data centers, tore down one, got married, developed a product, had a kid, moved 19 times, lived on both the East and West coasts, run a geriatrics center and traveled a small piece of the world. Read on if you’d like more info…. After High School, I worked for Franklin Mint for a short time, till their limited edition items where not so limited, 2,500 (out of 5,000) of us got walking papers. After that I went to work for SEI Investments (Oaks, PA). I started out as a computer room operator and worked up to a shift supervisor. Went to Villanova night school for a bit, but myself and classes never really quite mixed. In 1981, took a transfer to LA, CA. night manager of the data center. If you have not gotten it yet, I'm a computer geek. Any way, I lived in Manhattan Beach for two and half years (a half blocks from the beach, life was tough then). Switched gears and became a DBA (Data Base Administrator), yea another geeky thing (who knew, I sure as hell didn't). In 1983, Wells Fargo Bank asked me to work for them, at first I said no. A couple of months later, it came to me that some one would have to die or leave before I could move up. So I called Wells Fargo back and they where still looking. Loaded up the truck and moved to San Francisco. I was there for two years as an AVP and Manager of a data center. I had a great place to live, view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay. As it turned out, the town was a little too liberal for my narrow mind. Gave them six months notice, which they could not believe and they tried to give me a set of golden handcuffs (money, not the kinky stuff), which I turned down (looking back in it, boy was that costly). All the while, I was dating cross country, not for the weak of hearted or poor. In 1985, moved back the PA and went back to working for SEI Investments. I developed a knack for being asked to take over departments that had operational issues, which...Expand for more
a person in their right mind would never touch. Got married in 1986, my wife’s name is Debby. Did other jobs for SEI like, systems programmer, and then moved into product development. So now I’m a well rounded geek. In 1999, a company called Quest Software asked (there it is again, the one thing that I’m lucky at, cause the lottery sure as hell hasn’t) me to work for them. So I took a quick inventory of what was available at SEI, been there, done that, would not touch that with a ten foot pole, and so I told Quest I would come work for them. My job was to travel to companies (where ever they told me to go, all around the US, Canada, Australia and Singapore) and be a Sr. Systems Consultant. Basically, I would work with sales reps and tell companies how they could get their systems to work with our software and save money. Well, in 2004, I can say that I am now truly a Professional, I was traded to another company and I wasn’t even a free agent. Quest did not think that the software I was working with fit in their line of business, which it didn’t. So they sold the software and us to Open Text Corp. (truly Quest’s loose, more ways then one). Now being at Open Text, I still doing the same thing, different title, oh I forgot, I still get to work out of my house, which I’ve been doing for the past five years. Got tired of Open Text and now I work for Redwood Software Inc, doing the same type of work (this company is more fun). Over the years I started and closed a number of personal businesses. I think that covers it, oh forgot again (age), I have a son Steven he’s 14 (2005) and he’s a whole other store. I also have my Mom and Debby’s Mom living with us (what I meant about the geriatrics center). Debby and I have been married for over 19 years (as of 2005) now and we feel like it was just last year. We live between Pottstown and Reading, have a nice view of the Oley-Amity valley (yea, lots of farm land). The end: Really.
