Mark's Story

Life My Life... Where I'm at... For those of you not aware of my location, I moved my family to sunny Southern California - aka SoCal, back in November 2001. I originally came here with nothing but my Green Card, my personal belongings, and of course my wife DeAnne, and my 2 girls Colette and Casey. Things started out slowly here for me, as it was quite a challenge to get work in the IT field right after 9/11, with all the restrictions the US gov't put on businesses. I work in Project Management on the Defense side of things where we work to protect our country with the latest technology and partner with the government to keep all of our allied troops safe. I ended up getting my US citizenship and things took off from there for me. I started working at Qualcomm in San Diego, then moved on to Cubic Transportation, then Cubic Defense, and now at ViaSat, Inc., in Carlsbad, CA. I love my life out here. My kids are doing great and love to play......water polo!? That's right, not figure skating, but water polo. I must admit that once I figured out the game and what all the whistles were, it is a high cardio workout for them and they LOVE it. My wife DeAnne is also doing great out here. She is the VP of an Intellectual Property Company, where they are launching a couple of new products in the medical devices field and cargo fields. We are hoping for big things from these companies, and look forward to a BIG payday, and then we can do it all over again. I have a yellow lab named Hurley - she is great, but a little too smart at times - oh, and there are the cats, Sandy and Tickles - they're not mine, I won't claim them, so I won't say anything more about them... My Recreational Activities I am still playing hockey (don't laugh - if Chelios can still play, so can I), golf (this is southern California you...Expand for more
know), and drink beer (I'm told it's good for you). My kids water polo takes up a great deal of time and travel, but we wouldn't have it any other way. It seems to keep them out of trouble and on the straight and narrow. Colette is a junior in high school (that's Grade 11 for the Canadians reading this - I know, I still haven't figured out all of the terminology out here either), Casey is a senior in middle-school (that's Grade 8). We are so proud of both of them, and they recently played water polo together in Hawaii this past summer. There is nothing more exciting then getting to see your kids play a competitive sport together on the same team. They both did great, and the team finished 2nd place in the tournament. That's about the extent of my life out here - I love it and we are all very happy out here. Obviously, we miss all of our friends back in St. Thomas, but we truly believe this was the best move for our kids and they have so many opportunities out here - and the weather isn't that bad either. School Simply too painful to publish here... College Let's see, some of this stuff was so long ago. I graduated from DeVry in 1985, with an Electronics Engineering Diploma. I then persued some technical certifications from Microsoft and CompTIA and got my MCP, MCSA, A+, Network+ certs. I then went back to school and got my Bachelor of Science in IT with a focus on Project Management in 2005. So you see, school never really ends - at least not for me. My next goal is to get my PMP certification from PMI - for those of you who don't know what it is, it's just another 3 letters I would get to put next to my name. As it stands now, my business cards would read; Mark B. Reid, EET, A+, Network+, MCP, MCSA, PMP....and on and on...I guess I have a thirst for knowledge - or at least the alphabet.
