Mark's Story

Life After I left Limestone we went to England where I was hoping to get into the University of Liverpool but the draft got to me before I could start classes so I joined the Navy instead of going into the Army and being sent to Vietnam. So I spent two years in Vietnam mostly working with river boats in the Mekong Delta. When I got out I stayed with my folks in Omaha, NE., for a short time but it was long enough to meet my wife. I went to the University of Washington where I graduated in 76. My education was environmental land use planning and nothing showed up in the way of a job so I floated around for about 15 years, going through over a dozen jobs and business starts. In 92 while going through my midlife crisis I decided to go back to school and get my teaching credentials. I graduated from the Univ of Minnesota with my M.Ed and I was an 8th grade science teacher in Rochester, Mn. Being somewhat of a late bloomer, I am now finishing my PhD in Science Education; just have to finish my dissertation. I did some Adjunct Professor work with the UMN. As a tea...Expand for more
cher I earned my National Board Teacher Certification in Adolescent Science Education. I was nominated by my peers and was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. I retired in 2010. My wife of just about 50 years was also a teacher and we have two kids, one of each. Our daughter has provided us with the joy of a granddaughter, who will probably be our one and only grandchild. In my retirement I am mostly involved in civic activities. I have served on the City Council and the school board. I was the chair of the city's Human Rights Commission and have participated in several community planning and community input activities. A few years back, Red Wing was recognized as the best small town in the US and it is fun keep in touch and to be involved with such a vibrant small town. We haven't become snowbirds so we just endure the winters and enjoy the summers on the Mississippi River waterfront There is a very active arts community in the area and the artist constantly provide displays and entertainment.. I don't participate, I just enjoy it.
