Mark's Story

My last traditional job was corporate treasurer for a handful of Silicon Valley Companies. I've had the most fun as a member of the team that brought out AMD 's first microprocessors in the early 80's and for guiding the graphics chip for Sony's first Playstation through a brand new wafer fab in Japan. Not an easy task. After more than 30 years crunching numbers I retired (wrong word) to take up a new challenge in Hawaii. Being one of the fourth generation to live in the islands I volunteered to deal with a failing real estate investment 3 years ago. Since then I've turned that problem into one of the top hostels in the world and radically expanded my horizons while having enormous fun doing so. *(Since then I've turned my attention to the other properties developed by my grandfather and am the trustee for 2 family trusts) I'm politically active, having been elected to the Waikiki Neighborhood Board, a non-paid elected office in the City and County of Honolulu. My oldest, Andrew works in NYC and lives in Brooklyn. My wife (not his mother) and I visited him a couple of times when we were enroute to Mediterranean and Agean cruises. One time we hit the weather at just the right time and had a memorable autumnal visit to Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum. Andrew longs to re...Expand for more
turn to Hawaii particularly in the winter. My other son, Thomas ,works with me to help me pull away from the businesses. One of those is going to house 2 restaurants in the middle of Waikiki. It has been a project that has gone on for almost 4 years and is only just now coming to fruition. Someday it is my hope that they will jointly run the businesses and further develop the properties. My indoor passion is cooking. Whenever possible I take non-credit courses at Kapiolani Community College which has a world class culinary program and hope to someday enroll in the "for credit" program. As for the out-of-doors I take hostel guests on hikes to places like Manoa Falls, Makapuu Lighthouse, and Diamond Head every week. I'm pretty good about getting out on the waves to go surfing 2-3 times a week and not so good about going for rides around the island on my 1987 BMW motorcycle that I bought many years ago on the european delivery plan. *(Note these have fallen to the wayside due to the restaurants. I can't remember the last time I was on the waves and the motorcycle is now a "project". I do walk around Diamond Head almost daily totalling 35+ miles a week) Now the world calls to me. With my wife we plan to go on cruises, RV trips, maybe even rent a place in Italy for a month or two.
