Mark's Story

Life - Not As You Expect It, But As It Unfolds - Or What a Long Strange Trip It Continues To Be I live in northern Delaware, just south of Philadelphia. I am married to a wonderful woman who is a professor and assistant dean at a major medical school/university in Philadelphia. We have been married for 19+ years. No kids, but we have adopted three retired racing greyhounds. We bought a house in 2001 (60 years old now) as an excuse for me to buy lots of tools and learn a little about multiple building trades. Lots of trees; you'd think you were in the mountains.. I need to teach the dogs how to mow the lawn, because my wife isn't interested..Or buy a couple goats..The neighbors would love that. I decided to rebel after I graduated from Princeton.... Surprised? Me too. Eventually got a bachelors from U.C. in 1985 after some very hard lessons and 'interesting' life experiences. I discovered what it was like to be unemployed during the height of the 1982 recession during the trickle down economics era. After discovering my first degree was insufficient for a decent job, I went back for my masters in 1991 at Western Kentucky University. Received my MS in 1994. I am currently a registered professional geologist in two states. I started exploring caves during college. Caving is like mountaineering in the dark in a lot of respects. ..I have been the first person to ever see or walk in certain places under southern Kentucky, where I led a group of friends mapping a cave system which is in the top 100 for length in North America. After getting my MS, I spent ten years as an environmental consultant. I went into the business thinking I could leave the environment a little better than I found it. Sadly, the environmental consulting industry is often more about compliance with existing regulations and positioning clients so they keep their costs low and not get into legal trouble.. Want to help the environment? Send your contributions to the Center for Biological Diversity, the Sierra Club, or the Nature Conservancy.... Don't trust industry or their consultants to tell you about their fine environmental records... Welcome to my mid-life crisis.Between the long hours and the constant push for billable hours, my quality of life decreased dramatically. In 2002, I was laid off and couldn't find another job in the industry more sane than t...Expand for more
he one I had been working. Now, I volunteer my technical expertise to support environmental causes I believe in. In 2004, I took a position in big box home improvement retail and worked there for nearly seven years. I was honored by the company for customer service excellence on multiple occasions and by my customers (including one remarkable customer who thought enough of my help to write the CEO of my company). I have an evolving second career as an artist. I started to paint during 2000. After I left the consulting industry, I painted nearly full-time for a couple years. I began to show my work to the public during 2003. You'll see some of my work in the image posting section of my profile. I currently exhibit my work in a 150 mile radius of Wilmington and participate in local and regional events. If you google The Art of Mark V. Turner, you'll find me on the web.... I've collected multiple awards from competitions, so there's a few ribbons in the house. UPDATE: Collected Judges Choice Award at the 2013 Ocean City, MD Arts Alive event for painting, and Blue Ribbon for Painting (Oils and Acrylics) at the 50th Annual Havre de Grace Art Show. During 2011, Home Depot and I parted company over my art career..Despite being a part timer specifically b/c of my art career, the store wanted me there during the time that art shows are held - on weekends....I suppose that would have been OK if they had bothered to tell me this before I signed contracts to appear at multiple summer shows. I suppose there's lots to be said for the short-sighted nature of retail management. So, I continue to do art and have started a business, making soy wax container candles. Look for River Road Candleworks out there on the web and you'll find me.... So here I am, a liberal entrepreneur business person with a creative arts and crafts bent - who would have thought that would happen?? Certainly not me. Now I am trying to grow my small business to support the art career... My retail sales at craft shows are good during certain portions of the year and I do not have a brick and mortar storefront rent to pay currently. But the winter months are slow and this is when revenue would be good since this is when one schedules one's art shows. So, I am looking for wholesale opportunities to augment the retail portion of the business. We shall see how this works out..
