Mark's Story

Life Hello all, I've been married to my wife Doreen for 44 years. She was in the nursing field for 12 years and now assists with the family businesses. Our son, Matthew is 41 and owns an organ building business. He is married and brought into our life 6 wonderful grand kids. We live about 2 hours north of the Twin Cities sold our lake home and now have a home with acrage outside of Mahtowa . Lots of wildlife from fox and dear to the ocasional black bear or pack of wolves (we even had a pet wolf for many years). We're the owners of an electrical contracting company working mainly with industrial machine controls and systems automation. You can see our businesses at lakesuperiorcompanies dot com. Business has been very good working in all the lower 48 states, 6 Canadian providences and Puerto Rico. As many of you may remember, I had a passion (some said sickness) for railroads during my school years. Well, we also own and operate a railroad passenger car leasing company called the Northern Minnesota & Ontario Railroad. We have 3 passenger cars in our fleet with our feature car called the Temperance River. It is an open platform observation that sleeps 8, full kitchen and dining areas and a large lounge area with oversized viewing windows. It was built in 19...Expand for more
50, weighs in at 144,000 pounds and was operated on the famed train, "The Midnite Special". Our travels by rail in one of our motorcars has taken us as far north as James Bay (the most northern point in Ontario by rail). We have spent many a days running our motorcar between Sault Saint Marie and Hearst Ontario. We enjoy the Lake Superior region the most. Long term goal is to own and operate a wine & dinner train at different cities within the five state region. I attended college at UC Davis in viticulture and enology with the plan to open a vineyard and winery using our railroad equipment as part of the draw. Time will tell where this all takes place. Dori and I also have a passion for kayaking. Locally we like Lake Superior on the north and south shores but especially around the sea caves. Additionally we've kayaked with killer whales and sea lions in Puget Sound and manatee and gators in Florida. This past couple years, Dori and I have been doing foster work. We've had some children with autism, others unable to establish a relationship with people in general or just normal kids with parents who had too many of their own problems in life. We specialize with teenage girls as I travel a lot so Dori is able to offer them companionship on a full time basis.
