Mark's Story
So what have I been doing since I last saw many of my classmates in 1977? Well, I graduated from UC Berkeley in Biochem and had the most amazing group of friends and roommates you can imagine; they taught me SO much and helped me grow up in very significant ways . I did molecular biology research there for several yrs, but all during that time I was growing socially and spiritually too. I figured out that the person I was becoming was happier working with people instead of lab equipment . So I segued into teaching high school and middle school science. All my clowning around was perfectly suited for these ages. I still love being with high school and college age kids cause they are at that time in life where they are becoming so rapidly that you can almost see them grow. That experience taught me a lot about myself and people. I still love re-connecting w my students from back then (now in their 30s!), and finding out what they are up to. This is especially sweet when you can see that you made a little difference in their life.
While teaching, I met and married my beautiful wife Karen, an intuitive angel, teacher, resident genius and the Ying to my Yang. She has helped me learn how to be better at knowing what I am feeling and expressing love for people - cause she does it so well. She's my partner and best encourager to this day. Our son Daniel, a future writer (now in his mid twenties - where did all that time go!), was born during that time. I stil remember him as a baby being in my class during my prep period, and crawling down the hallway to find the principal, who he loved seeing. When the teaching season ended, I moved into the medical diagnostics industry, spending several yrs in sales in Orange County, CA. There Bryanna Joy was born, (now a professional ballerina, and no, she didn't get her dance skills from me :-). One of my fondest memories of that time is gathering the kids up after work and heading out to the beach for dinner. Then we moved back to N. CA where so I could take take a product management job with my company (where Grace was born, our little harpist, now a sophmore at the Cleveland Institute of Music). I learned a LOT about business and entrepreneurship during this time - this was where I cut my teeth career-wise.

ly apparent :-). This was really helpful since you need to know this in order to find and begin to migrate toward your destiny. I always was a bit of a slow bloomer! A big lesson I began to learn was beginning to connect w God's love for me - this was really revolutionary for me since I was pretty emotionally disconnected and my image of God had always been informed by my own Dad, who emphasized meeting high expectations and following the rules as opposed to a relaxed relationship. These two themes of destiny and the felt presence of God still run through my life today, and my kids have been able to get there a lot faster than their Dad as a result. They'll pass me up anytime soon (if they haven't already), and that's as it should be!
After 10 yrs at that medical diagnostics company, we ended up in NJ for 5 yrs. I worked for a huge medical device company, helping them identify new business opportunities and build a new healthcare IT business in tracking and reducing medical errors, and then at a startup software company helping them get into the healthcare segment. Our kids really grew up in NJ, and still think of that as home. I still fondly remember the crunch of the snow under my feet on my midnight walks w the dog and building snow mountains on our long downhill driveway for the kids to slide down. This move really helped bring our family closer together - this happens when you move and at first don't know a single person within 100 miles!
We came back to the East Bay in 2004, where I did Business Development and product marketing for a big biotech instrument company and later an oncology diagnostics and personalized medicine company. As always, my main focus was to help them get into new markets to jumpstart growth (my career theme - I wish I could say I planned it that way :-).
Today we live in Castro Valley, CA,where I'm doing some consulting in new market dev't and strategies to increase sales growth. Since the kids are grown up, we're about to engage on our next big adventure, moving this Fall (2014) to be near UCONN (of basketball fame), where Karen will fullfill her dream of getting a PhD in Ed Psych and we will again experience those snowy walks. May joy, peace and abundance be yours,
