Mark's Story

I attended WVU for a year before joining the Army in 1983 to learn to fly helicopters. I did that till 2000 when I began flying airplanes and followed that with small passenger jets in 2005. I very much enjoyed what I did and and was ready to come to work every day and did so with a smile on my face even after so many years. I have been very fortunate to have been able to fly all over the world to include every continent except Australia and Antarctica. Some locations have been memorable for their beauty like South America and Scandanavia while others like Iraq and Afghanistan have been memorable for the desire to never see or return to such places again. I have a wonderful German wife who I met when I flew to her small town for an airshow and she acted as my translator for the weekend. She graciously put up with all the Army had to offer to an Army wife. We have two sons who have both attended German schools but really enjoyed the times they got to return to WV and shoot guns, see wild animals and ride on the ATV's and tractors. One is attending the US Military Academy,West Point class of 2017. I am presently in Germany for the 3rd time, from where my Army work allowed me to pi...Expand for more
lot aircraft as far west as Kansas and as far east as Pakistan and virtually every country and capital in between. Of the many locations I have lived, Germany was without a doubt the best assignment ever. The worldly travels of myself and our vacation going family will slow down in the end 2014 when I retired from the Army after having flown with over 500 different pilots, visited over 60 countries, served for 31+ years, moved 11 times, attended 3 wars, helped raise 2 sons and managed to keep just 1 marriage. Having retired from the government we are staying a few years in Germany before possibly locating to Alabama and enjoying some quiet peaceful time. ...........Did retire at the end of 2014 from the best job I ever had - US Army Pilot. Matter of fact, it was the same job except for different locations and helicopters and airplanes for 31+ years. I still looked forward to coming to work right up to the end and each and every flight brought a new location and adventure. I have taken a job flying passenger airplanes in the Middle East that allows me to come home often and permits me to continue living in Germany for at least 2 more years till the youngest graduates from German HS.
