Mark's Story

I graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1975 and immediately went to work for Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria, Illinois. Although I've had the opportunity to travel around the world on business for the company, I've lived here in Peoria ever since arriving. I worked in Product Development for 20 years, Marketing for 10 years and Corporate Public Affairs for the final 7 years. I retired in 2009 when I was 57 but have never regretted the decision to leave corporate life. My wife and I were married in 1979, she was an elementary school teacher in Peoria. spring of 2017, so now I'm just a dotting grandpa. I do a lot of volunteer work in Peoria, I've been President of the Peoria Historical Society the past couple of years and teach classes in early Peoria history at both the local Community College as well as the adult education department of Bradley University. It all keeps me plenty busy. Some of you might remember my father who was a math teacher at PHS. He retired early when he was only 55 years old as he'd just had it with the kids. He moved back to Eagle River, WI where he'd grown up and had a wonderful retirement until he began to show signs of Parkinson's. He struggled as that disease progressed until he passed away in 2006 at age 79.
