Mark's Story
Life
Mark McFarland is an Assistant
Professor of Music Theory at
Georgia State University.
He received his B.A. from Chapman
University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in
Music Theory from the University of
California at Santa Barbara. He also
studied at the Université
François-Rabelais de Tours under a
fellowship from the Rotary
International Foundation. He is
the ex-President of the South
Central Chapter of the Society for
Music Theory.
Dr. McFarland has delivered papers on Stravinsky, Debussy, Milhaud, Brubeck, Holst, Vaughan Williams and theories of musical influence at regional, national and international conferences. His publications appear in journals including The International Journal of Musicology, Cahiers Debussy, Theoria, The Horn Call, Music Theory Spectrum and The Journal of Music Theory. nduct archival research in Basel, Switzerland at the Paul Sacher Stiftung. He is currently writing up the fruits of this research for publication.
A horn player, Dr. McFarland studied
with Jim Thatcher and his
performance credits include the
Pacific Symphony and the Baton
Rouge Symphony. He can also be
heard on the upcoming Centaur
compact disc of chamber works by
Muczynski. Dr. McFarland is also a
recipient of the University of
California's Interdisciplinary
Humanities Fellowship, and has
given pre-concert lectures for several
different organizations including the
Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
Prior to his arrival at GSU in 2005,
Dr. McFarland taught at the University
of North Texas, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the University of
Texas at El Paso, Southeastern Louisiana State University, California State
University at Long Beach, and the
University of California at Santa
Barbara.
