Mark's Story

July 2009 What's happened since last time I updated? Let's see, I got hit by a car on the way to work last September (I was on a motorcycle). I sustained no major injuries, just a few bruises. The bike was worse off but the driver's insurance had to pay for all the repairs. I went to Winston-Salem over the Christmas holidays and visited my family there and in Durham, plus a number of old friends. It was nice to be home. In March I crashed on the race track and dislocated my right shoulder and a couple of fingers - ouch! Still undergoing physical therapy on my shoulder but I avoided surgery and it's getting better every week. I went to the Netherlands again in April to visit my good friends there for a week and to attend the World Superbike races at Assen - what a blast! We really had a fun time. And one evening we drove about an hour and a half to meet for dinner with one of my work colleagues whom I had never met in person. That was really cool. I survived another round of layoffs at my company (Sun Microsystems) back in January. I'm now an engineering manager and I had to lay off 3 people. That was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, because these were people I'd known for years and considered friends. Luckily, we've remained friends and have met up for dinner a few times since then. This is kinda scary - I moved to California in 1988 to go to work for Oracle Corporation, where I stayed for 10 years. I left Oracle in 1998 to go work for a small company, Forte Software, because I was tired of the big company thing. 2 years later...Expand for more
, Forte got bought by Sun Microsystems - so much for the small company environment. Now, another 8 years later, Oracle has bought Sun so I'm right back where I started, except that Oracle is probably 10 times bigger now. My Dutch friends are coming to visit me for a week at the end of August. I can't wait to show them around the SF Bay Area, there's so much great stuff to see and do here! If anyone wants to connect with me on FaceBook, you can find my profile under "motomark". August 2008 I'm still living in the hills of Oakland, CA and working for Sun Microsystems, now as a senior engineering manager. It was great to see many of my old friends at the 30th reunion in 2003. I had really hoped to attend the 35th but by the time the date was picked, I had already scheduled a motorcycle trip in Italy - this was the trip I had canceled in 2006 when I broke my leg. I've fully recovered now; the final hardware removal surgery was done on Valentine's Day in 2008. In May/June I went to the Netherlands to visit friends there for a week, then down to Munich where I started the ride to Florence, Italy and back. It was fantastic riding through the Dolomites and along the shores of Lago de Garda, the largest lake in Italy. And of course, attending the MotoGP race at Mugello was a blast. In August 2008 I went back out on the race track for the first time in 2 1/2 years and had a great time. I ended up racing again later that month and enjoyed it, but I don't plan to do too much racing next year - I'd rather go on weekend rides to places I've never seen.
