Marla's Story

Life Written September 20, 2003 My dad passed away when I was only 12 years old, which is one of the reasons I ended up in Orlando and later at Evens. My mom moved us to Florida from Indiana.... Go figure.... I struggled my way (for many unamed reasons) through High School deeply searching for answers I never found until years later. I worked at Walt Disney World from the time I was 17 and left there at 21 when I married and moved to California. I met my (now ex) husband at Disney. We had our first child Amy when we were 25 and the second, Alyssa when we were 30. No big deal.... Except that little did I know, that was the beginning of the end of a marriage that choked it's way along for another 12 years..... When Amy was 16, she announced to us that she was pregnant. Our lives were turned totally upside down and inside out!! Austin (now 5!!) was born when she was 17. They lived with us for a total of 1 1/2 years before she moved out. When Austin was only about 2 months old, my husband got up and announced that he was leaving. Looking back at that year, had I not had a relationship with God at that time, I might have ended my life.... It was so hard that first year and even into the second, but then finally things began to even out for all of us. I was a survivor!! Today, my oldest daughter is 22. She is married to Austin's daddy and they have 2 more kids. Jacob is almost 2 1/2 and Brianna "the princess" is 15 months old. Being a grandmother is one of the biggest and best blessings ever!! My youngest daughter Alyssa is a senior in high school and has just made the connection that I graduated from high school 30 years before she will this next June. How times have changed..... She i...Expand for more
s doing ALL I never did in High School and I am so proud of her!! She played clarinet for 7 years and this year is broadening her horizons and plays bass drum this year!! She will play basketball for her 5th season (started in Jr. High) this winter. Me? Like most other single moms, I go to work every day and live to love my kids and do whatever I can for them. Sometimes they ask too much of me and I am working on saying no when I need to.... College I was a "LATE BLOOMER!" I was not really interested in college until I was married and had 2 kids. I started at a Junior College in the small town where I live; it took my 7 years of part-time until I was ready to transfer. Through scholarships and many loans, I attended Fresno Pacific College - a Christian school.(since has been named a University) I graduated in 1993 with a degree in Lberal Studies. I was not hired full-time for 2 years (I was a substitute teacher) In 1995 I was hired to teach for Fresno Unified School District. I have taught grades 1,2 and 2/3 so far. Workplace When I was 17 (before graduation) I went to work at Walt Disney World. I worked in Wardrobe (all locations) which is where I met my (now ex) husband. I was there for 5 years. After marriage in 1978, I moved to California and worked as a Teacher's Aide. We made a move to Reedley in 1982 and I got a job running the Career Center at Reedley High School. During some of the 10 years I was at that job, I went back to school at the local Junior College. In 1992 I quit my job so that I could finish and get my teaching credential. After graduation in 1993, I was a substitute teacher and was hired full time in 1995. I have been teaching in Fresno full time since then.
