Marlena Haffner's Story
After graduating from HUHS I attended Azusa Pacific University and completed my BS at University of Oregon; finished my masters degree at University of Washington in clinical social work in 1978. Finally, I began my REAL education, living and working on Dunk Island on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, waiting tables in a pub in England, teaching skiing in the Swiss Alps on Jungfraujoch, and writing for Stars and Stripes in Darmstradt, Germany, professionally modeling in all three countries.
Returned to the Pacific Northwest three years later, started a private psychotherapy practice, and got married to a handsome general contractor and a ready-made family with two wonderful teenagers. The next year we had a son, Taylor, now a high school junior, 16. Took turns helping coach sports, volunteering as a cubscout den leader. Spent...Expand for more
every weekend cheering at one freezing athletic event or another, a veritable picture of domesticity. Traded the mercedes SL for a messy SUV with peanut butter prints. Ours was the house all the kids ended up at- woke up to find strange teenagers on our couch every weekend, fridge contents predictably deleted like clockwork. Sadly, the marriage ended right after 9/11. Campaigned vigorously to trade the house for his mother (one cool lady), but no deal was struck. So, in the interim seven years, I have cycled the Seattle-to-Portland (STP) bicycle race twice. Am active at one of our 7000-member mega-churches. Have a very busy business, counseling, coaching Microsoft executives, teambuilding and critical incident debriefing for Boeing, and smaller companies. Reminding myself and others to occasionally....Stop... and smell the roses.
