Marnelle's Story
After getting a B.S. in Sociology at Portland State, I moved to BC where my Dad's maternal family lives. I worked with women and children in domestic violence shelters for several years. In 1999, I returned to the US to complete an M.S.W. at the University of Washington. In 2001, I returned to Canada to begin law school at the University of Victoria.
While in law school, I worked at UNICEF in Thailand for 8 months and travelled to Laos, Cambodia, India, Malaysia and Singapore. It was an amazing trip.
I graduated from law school in April 2005. To get called to the Bar, Canadian law students must pass bar exams and then "article" for 10 months. I was offered an articling position in Toronto at the largest specialized family law firm in Canada. I couldn't pass that up, so I moved. ear in Toronto, I knew I could never live there permanently. There was too many people and too much cement. I wanted more greenspace and a slower pace.
Many of my friends from Toronto are originally from London, Ontario. London (population 350,000) is "centrally located" about two hours from Toronto, Buffalo and Detroit. I had spent some time there with my friends and I really liked it, so I moved. It's a bit like Victoria, without the mountains or ocean...small things ;) Having lived in three countries, four US states, three Canadian provinces, three towns in BC and two in Ontario since becoming an adult, I am ready to stop moving! Ok, one day I *may* move back home... time will tell :)
I've been working as legal counsel at a Children's Aid Society (child protection agency) since September 2006. I love the work and the cause!
