Marsha's Story
I am from Louisville, Kentucky. My schools include Waggener High School, University of Kentucky, University of Louisville (B.A. degree, English, minor in education), Johns Hopkins (Master's Liberal Arts), Medill School at Northwestern University (Journalism classes), plus University of Maryland, George Mason University, University of Virginia for various post-grad courses.
After a year of teaching high school English in Louisville, I moved to Maryland for another teaching job. There I met my husband Jim Fall. We had an adventurous 41 years together which included living in Bonn, Germany for 2 years, Berne, Switzerland for 4 years, and Paris for 6 years where Jim was the Financial Attache at the US Embassies. He was an international economist for the U.S. Treasury Department. We had two sons together who have grown up to be fine men, as their father was.
Our travels gave me the opportunity for some interesting job opportunities. I taught journalism part-time at the International School in Berne. In Paris, I was the editor of the Embassy NEWS, a weekly newsletter which went out to about 5,000 diplomats throughout France.
Upon returning to the States and living in Falls Church, Virginia , I went back to teaching high school En...Expand for more
glish and journalism and producing the school's newspaper. After 5 years of this, the International Baccalaureate Program came
to Fairfax County, VA, and I began teaching IB English and Theory of Knowledge, the philosophy course in the IB Degree program. I continued this until my early retirement in 2005. I retired because my husband, 4 years older, wanted to retire. We came down to Hilton Head, , a place where we'd vacationed for years, bought and renovated a house, and I have been here ever since. I am so grateful that we did retire when we did, as Jim ended up getting only 6 years of retirement before he died. He was an active athlete and community leader, the healthiest among us, until the day he got sick. Five months later, he was gone.
I've continued an active and involved life here. I have wonderful supportive friends and my sons are close, even though they live far away. I have reinvented myself in unexpected ways. There is no other choice.
One of my favorite quotes is:"Say what you mean and mean what you say.". My students, many of whom are still in touch, tell me that they remember that quote to this day!
I hope I am able to come to the 50th reunion.....sad to say....it will be the first reunion I've gotten to!
